Anime Filtering

Hello all,

I am attempting to capture and encode some anime episodes that come on Cartoon Network (i have an ATI All In Wonder VE Card). The captures themselves are pretty good, however when I filter and compress, I am getting bad results. How do people get such good results when compressing to Xvid or Divx (I dont care which one)? Also, what filters are good for anime that make them sharper, correct color, reduce noise, IVTC, etc.. I've tried decomb for IVTC and the results I get are pretty bad (yes, i've read the manual). I've seen screenshots of other peoples anime and they look very good (screenshot of mine is below). I am capturing in AVI format with Virtualdub, 29.970fps, 720x480, Huffyuv. I'm using AVISynth for editing, Trim, IVTC, Crop, Resize to 640x480, Convolution3d, Warpsharp. I really want to know how to configure Xvid or Divx for the best possible results and what good filters are. When I compress, I use XviD and the bitrate calculator to achieve a size of 170mb (128kb/s VBR audio).

No, I meant a sample from the source you are encoding from. The encoded clip doesn't help.

just looking at the screenshot, it's severely blocky. maybe 170 megs is too little for that size picture?

also, there's obvious rainbowing in the capture. do you have access to that same channel in digital? (this may not help if their source is rainbowy too, but at the very least there'll be less rainbowing).

if you're stuck with analog, try using a different connection. if you're using the antenna input on your card, try s-video instead - it's possible your tuner has a better comb filter than the card does, in which case you'll get a better capture that way. the better the comb filter, the less crosstalk (rainbow and dot-crawl). of course that's only for composite sources.

2 filters you might want to look at are DeDot and BiFrost. i haven't used the latter, but i hear it's pretty good. DeDot can be hugely effective against dot crawl, so long as you don't run any filters first (especially no deinterlacing before dedot).

Please provide an unprocessed sample, an encode makes error spotting a futile task. Also, how long is each episode?

"One Piece" and is a half hour show, so it should be 22-24 minutes after commercials are removed.
