Foreign Film, Region 1 problem?

I have been ripping a number of DVDs in various methods, using the ISO for 1:1 exact, also, I have used the DVD Decrypter to split into files and then used Nero recode; finally, I have begun to use DVDShrink and variations of the guides on this site to be successfull.
While I don't have it all figured out, one film, "Downfall," while I can copy it to a DL disk using the simplified DVDDecrypter method with ISO, I tried to shrink it noting the RCE codes (which DVDD. warned about) and found that the final DVD5 video was the portion of the video where the director was speaking over the movie, his discussion and not the movie. So what else would I need to do to capture the entire film--- I keep thinking that since this is a German film for viewing in the RCE region 1 (US and Canada) something must be up. Help.

Hi!found that the final DVD5 video was the portion of the video where the director was speaking over the movie, his discussion and not the movie.If, when playing your burned DVD (NOT simply individual .VOBs), you're seeing the entire movie, but are hearing the director's commentary, try using your remote control's "Audio" or "Language" button to select another audiostream, or try selecting another audiostream from the DVD's onscreen menu.

When using DVD Shrink, did you DEselect any audiostreams?

No, I did not deselect any audio streams because the main movie is in German with English subtitles (no choice there) and later extras are in English, or a translator speaking over a German.

maybe I don't know what exactly you mean as I thought. As far as the main video, there is only the German language audio. Am I missing something in what you are saying?

He is suggesting that you grab the remote control for your DVD player, and look for a button that says "AUDIO." Then, press this (while playing your backed up DVD disc). If what you have posted is correct, every time you press this button, it should result in the DVD player advancing from one audio choice to the next. Eventually, you should hopefully hit on the one you wish to hear.

If you did not "de-select" any of the audio streams when you made this burned disc, then they should all be there. You must tell your DVD player which one you wish to listen to, though.

In the case of the Region 1 release of the film "Downfall," there are only two audio choices. (Some DVDs have as many as five or six). The two choices on the Downfall DVD are:

1.) AC3 5.1 German (this will be the regular German language soundtrack, in a Dolby Digital surround sound format).

2.) AC3 2.0 English (this is the commentary track, and it is the one you were listening to that led to your post).

Anytime a DVD comes up playing the wrong audio choice, just grab that remote.

ok I think that the problem is different than I have been appearing to represent. Simply it is this: I can take this film, "Downfall" and do a 1:1 copy with DVDDecrypter ISO mode onto a DL disk, and it is just perfect. My problem is that I cannot shrink it. I ASSUMED that the problem had to do with RCE, languages, etc. since I kept getting the "2nd" half of the disk that had the Director talking over the film. So, it isn't that I'm just getting the wrong language, I am not getting the main movie.

I've used DVD Shrink, Nero Recode2.

Sounds like the "Director's Comments" are somehow overwriting the main audio. If the Director's Comments are not needed, just try deselecting them with DVDShrink. I had this problem before with The Passion of the Christ. I never really listen to the Directors Comments anyway, so I just got rid of them. After that, the Standalone played the audio fine.

When using DVD Shrink are you doing a "Full Disk" backup or are you using the "Re-Author" mode?

1. I have been doing a "Full Disk" backup. I have not played with the Re-author mode as of yet.

That is mysterious, indeed!

As an experiment, try first ripping the DVD to your hard drive, using DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4 in "File" mode (select "ALL files", NOT just "movie" files) and save the DVD Decrypter log - Then use DVD Shrink to "Open files" and select "Full Disk Copy"

perhaps there's a command sequence on the disc that is being borked somehow?

discs with muliple audio tracks can have problems when going from extras (1 audio) to feature (2 or more audio). this is because if there's no "track 2", the player does not remember that you set it to play track two in setup. however, there's a way around this using command sequences in authoring. now depending on how the disc was authored, this could get broken somehow when you back the disc up. removing PUOs when ripping can result in strange things happening sometimes (like allowing fast-forward on an animated menu is a bad thing, because you can miss the frame where the menu buttons load, and thus you get a menu that you can't navigate).

so in short, maybe you could try re-ripping without removing PUOs and see if you still get a problem.

i'm stabbing in the dark here, though... it'll probably make no difference :)
