To correctly encode stereo to UHJ format is difficult because "real" UHJ encoding requires material that was properly recorded for ambisonic encoding/decoding. For regular stereo, the xperts usually suggest something called SuperStereo encoding, the formulas for which you can find at http://www.geocities.com/ambinutter/UHJ_and_Ambisonic_equations.html. Note that the "j" in these equations stands for a 90° phase shift of the signal. You can accomplish this with an excellent (and free) VST plugin called Phasebug (available at http://www.savioursofsoul.de/Christian/Plugins.htm). If you're using Plogue Bidule, you can also accomplish the phase shift with the FIR module. This seems to produce a -90° phase shift (based on my comparison tests), but you can change this to +90° simply by adding an inversion unary operator to the output.

Steve.
