Hello,

over christmas I installed a new AMD 64 X2 3800+ CPU in an ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Mobo looking forward to real fast encodings with Nero Recode2.

To my suprise Recode2 immediately died when I started the encoding without any error message. It worked fine when I removed one core from the Recode process in task manager.

I contacted Nero Support and got the following answer (German, translation follows):

"Dies hägnt zusammen mit der internen Architektur des Dual Core. Viele Anwendungen kommen damit noch nicht zurecht.

Sollten Sie weitere Fragen haben, können Sie uns jederzeit eine email zusenden.

Mit freundlichen Grüßen,

Nero Technical Support"

Translation
"This is due to the internal architecture of the dual core. A lot of applications do not get along with that."

For me this means that Nero Recode2 does _not_ work utilizing both cores of an AMD Dual-Core CPU.

At the moment I can't cut down encoding times using both cores to speed up the encoder. I can run two Recode processes though and bind them to different cores which gives me two encodings at roughly the same time as one encoding with a single core.

Regards
Klaus

PS: Same problem with Itunes ripping CDs. Versions prior 6.0.2 also died running both cores. Apple resolved that in 6.0.2.

I have Recode2 currently encoding an AviSynth script in the background.. works like a charm. I have an X2 4600.. It just doesn't make real use of both cores.. the SMP optimized NeroDigital core (at least for AVC) is still only available from ateme and will only be integrated into Recode at some later point (info courtesy of my codec comparison ;) )
NeroDigital ASP support SMP though.. (yes, I have verified).
My Recode version is 2.2.7.5.

Is that Nero 7? My version is 2.2.6.17, latest update of 6 Reloaded.

I have not tested the ASP codec so far, AVC definetly does not work with this version.

yes he is using a recode version that comes with nero 7...try using nero 7 and see if it crashes.

on my p4 3.0 HT im running two instances of recode at once and assigning them affinity like you are.

like he said we will have to wait longer for smp support, it only loads about 50% of my p4 with HT if i run one instance...and this is just HT not real SMP.

With my 4600+ X2, I am getting a Dr. Watson error on first pass using Nero6 latest update. Switched to Nero7 and it works fine.
