View Full Version : Booktype settings for a Philips drive

I successfully burned a few DVD+R DL disks (Memorex Media on Philips Drive). I used DVD Decrypter to make the original image (with MDS file) and also used it to burn the DL disk using the default settings. The DVD played back wonderfully in my other drive when I tested it. Later I tried to play the movies on my other computer (on a Samsung DVD-ROM SD616E). They only played through the first layer, then hung up and wouldn't continue on to the second layer.

I believe the problem may be that I need to set the booktype to something different, but I don't know what to choose. None of the tabs shown are for a Philips drive. Does this seem like a probable cause of the playback problem?

Thank you for any help you are able to give. :)

As it was playing the disc (full stop), I'd guess booktype isn't the problem.

It could be that it doesn't like Ritek DL discs (which I assume is what your Memorex ones are). Try some Verbatim ones, they're MUCH better.

Other than that, I've never had a Philips drive and so have made no effort to see if changing the booktype is even supported. Something like Nero's CD-Speed might be able to do it.
If it can, please let me know and I'll add support for it within ImgBurn.

I have a fairly old DVD-ROM drive which won't read +R disks at all, regardless of bitsetting. Have you noticed the same problem with your Samsung?

These are the first DVD+R DL disks that I've tried with my Samsung. No problems at all until the second layer. I have played several DVD-R on the Samsung that I burned myself on the Philips drive with no problems, but of course that doesn't really tell me much.

I just tested the DL disks I burned on a few of my friend's computers that have DVD drives much older than my Samsung, and they played flawlessly, even through the second layer. I also tried it to play the disk on a friend's XBox -- it wouldn't recognize the disk.

So apparently the burned disks are fine. They just don't work in some players such as mine. I recently reformatted my harddisk and reinstalled all my hardware with the original disks, most likely my drivers are not up-to-date. I will investigate that next.
