layer break ripping error

The problem is that every file on the dvd can be ripped except the vob file that spans the layer break. Usually, I can rip the portion of the vob that is before the layer break, but dvd decrypter will start reading errors and I can't get the rest of that vob. At this point I skip that file and get the rest of the files.

I have encountered this problem a few times, most recently on Otogi Zoshi, volume 2---this is an anime, region 1.

My solution has been to read the ifo with ifoedit and find the layer break. I then use ifo mode in dvd decrypter and get all cells pass the layer break and combine them with the first half. I'm leaving out the details to keep this post short---you can imagine the mess I go through to combine the split vob and make a working backup.

I have tried reading most of the post here that are concerned with ripping problems and I would guess that a few might be related to my problem.

Anyway, I would like to know if others have encountered this and how they solved it.

Assuming this is a purchased, commercial DVD, I for one, can't see the layer break being the cause of your problem. You should clean the disc and check for scratches. If you're still unable to rip it properly, return it to the place of purchase in exchange for a new replacement copy...

This is the area on the edge on the DVD - the area which is tradionally most vulnerable to errors.

1. Slow the rip speed.
2. Clean your drive.
3. Clean your DVDs.
4. Perhaps the DVDs are damaged - if so, take them back for an exchange (if they are new)

So, just a bad dvd...I thought there might have been other issues involved---I vaguely remember a thread that discussed the layerbreak being used as a form of copy protection.

Slowing the rip speed? I don't recall any options in dvd decrypt. I did have a program once that allowed me to set the read speed of my drives...used it for my 52x cd drive, otherwise it sounded like it was taking off...haha. Sony had this warning label about discs that might explode in the drive because of the speed.

It seems most drives will slow down if it hits a sector that is tough to read.

well, actually, replication plants can severely bugger up a layer break if the disc is quite full. it's good practice for an authoring house to get test discs made by the replicator, but sometimes there just isn't time (remember anime licensors want to get stuff out as soon as possible, lest people just download the fansubs). sometimes there'll just be a bad run of discs.

however it's far more likely (especially if this is happening a lot) that your drive is simply not reading as well as it used to. trying another drive is often a good idea (if there's one available).

i've ripped R1 Otogi v2 with no problem, though i only ripped the subs, so it might have dodged the layer break (no need to rip the video - we've got perfectly good master tapes for that).
