View Full Version : I know nothing about Hardsubbing,,, HELP !!!

Firstly a great big HELLO to all the unique great people here at doom9.

This I'm sure everyone has gathered is my very first post.

I admit to knowing virtually nothing about any topic in this field and I hope to learn anything I can from all the kind experts here who are willing to share their knowledge.

The questions I pose are probably ones that everyone BUT me knows the answers to. And it's probably something that's cumbersome to explain and/or pointless.
So I apologise in advance for this unnecessary trouble I have posed upon this community.

The issue at hand is "hardsubbing". Now I know there's many who think this is pointless.
But I need to explain my situation more clearly first.
I enjoy watching movies on my xda (Pocket PC), and the best movie player for that without a shred of doubt is TCPMP, formerly known as "betaplayer". Currently this great player is lacking support for subtitle files, which I hope will be included in the near future.
Now most films I don't require subtitles so it's just a simple encoding process.

But movies like Appleseed, Spirited Away, Grave of the fireflies, Sky blue, Akira ...etc, where you can't enjoy the movie except in it's original native language is where the problem comes.

The program I use to encode movies to ppc format is an amazing one in terms of quality and lightning speed. It's name is "VEMODE", it's one I don't think many have heard of. But believe me I have tried many encoding programs for PPC avi format and this one tops them all in my experience. It can encode an entire 2hr movie to 320x240 xvid format, 1000 kbits/sec video bitrate, audio mp3 192 kbit/sec, in less than 40mins, THAT'S FAST !!
Unfortunately, this also doesn't have an option to hardsub the output file as of yet.

So finally, after all that build up, is there any option within dvd decrypter to hardsub the subtitle stream into the output vob file during the ripping process ?

If not, is there any other dvd ripping program available that can do a hardsubbing process during the ripping process ?

One method I've already tried is using dvd decrypter in ifo mode, then I've used subrip to extract an srt file from the vob.
Then I've encoded the vob to avi using VEMODE,
and finally I've used another program called AVI RECOMP to hardsub the srt file into the avi.

Now the problem is that AVI RECOMP takes FOREVER !! I can't believe it took nearly 5 times longer than VEMODE whilst eating up 90% cpu power, whereas VEMODE only uses 50% cpu power and is blindingly faster.

And finally if there is no favorable answer to my previous question, after I use dvd decrypter to get my vob file, is there any DECENT avi encoding program available that recognizes vob files AND has an option to hardsub an srt file into the output avi ?
Preferably a fast encoder which doesn't guzzle the entire power of the cpu while its at it.

Thank you for your patience in enduring my long essay, and a great big thankyou in advance to anyone who can help me.

A simple and hopefully useful answer to your long post: AutoGK should fulfill your needs.

Thanks for that.

But are there no other options available to me other than AutoGK, that program encodes really well, I know. But it takes an IMMENSE amount of time with that program.

A 2hr movie would probably take about 3 - 4 hours with AutoGK.
Isn't there any other way ?

There are other ways, though I don't know of them all. I'm pretty sure they all take 2 to 4 times as long as the run length of the material to re-encode. I've been meaning to check out StaxRip to see what it can do.

Since you love your fast encoder (that I've never heard of), which you use for most movies that don't require subs, then continue to use that most of the time. For the occasional movie that needs hardsubbing, then use AutoGK for those few times. Sorry it takes "forever". I use an older computer to compress TV episodes to avi and it takes 5-7 hours. Presumably you sleep at night. Your computer could be doing the processing work at that time, and it wouldn't matter whether it was fast or slow. When you wake up, the movie will be done or nearly done.

Realms... I'm the developer of VEMoDe. I'm actually working on adding subtitles to the AVI from the DVD movies. I'm also adding batch encoding. I hope to have all that ready for a release sometime in the next week. Although I have a lot of testing to do to make sure it works with different configurations.

Stay tuned!

VEMoDe 1.1b was released today. It's had support for hardsubbing since a couple of versions.
