I/O error ? Guys, cant figure this one out

I use dvd decr. and dvd shrink, lately when both copying to hard drive and burning to dvd, i get this I/O error. Its almost ass if my dvd drive fell out of my computer. (not the case) At any rate its always at random spots, i tried lowering burn speed, and even reinstalled the programs. Any suggestions would be great. P.S. talk to me as if i dont know a dam thing about computers, i've been "out of the loop" since..Diablo 2 was released, quite rusty.

its a universal problem, title seems to be erelavant, cant burn files i previosly could with no problem

You may need to reinstall drivers and check and see if your drive firmware is current.

WarDog, when i was trying to resolve this problem myself something i read suggested the same, it said go to device mngr, uninstall drivers, and when i reboot, it should automatically bring up a wizard to reinstall. however, upon reboot i got no message, or anything. ive got an hp w/AMD 3400 ati i think the dvd drive is tsst (maybe). no backup disk just partitioned drive. I appologize for my lack of knowledge as i know this is about as basic as it gets

Usually the operating system will pick up the drivers for an optical drive (such as a dvd), without the wizard prompting for them, so don't be alarmed about not seeing the wizard.

It sounds like there's a problem with you DVD drive.

You can try updating the drivers and firmware of your dvd, like WarDog says. However, it might be faster to simply swap out your dvd drive with a new drive, to see if the old drive is the problem. That's what I'd do.

You can return the burner, no questions asked, within 30 days at almost all electronics stores, if this doesn't work.

Only problem is, bought the whole sys not just the dvd burner and really like it. (pavilion a1226n) Let me ad this to that comment - for my limited budget. and its full of crap already, have talked with hp techs many times, i think there as stupid as i am. (if theres any in this forum there excluded from that comment) I' m not convinced its a hardware issue, not that ive earned any right to conclude anything, but i guess im runnin outta options. maybe another few days ill try to reload everything, unless someone comes up with anything else. Just so everyones clear, it does start to burn, just doesnt finish and stops at random spots. ie 19% 56% 23%. Thanks all

Are you using DVD Decrypter or NERO (or something else?) to burn? Would you please post a complete log of one of your failed burns?

I use Dvd Decrypter, unfortunetly im not smart enough to think of saving a log file, and tonight my resources are goin to be maxed for a while. tommorow ill get you one, i can just c and p id immagine? Nit, the best way to find out if it's a bad dvd drive is to swap out the dvd drive. At least we'd then know if it's a software problem or a hardware problem. It need not cost you anything, because you can return a new dvd drive after you have swapped it out and done the test (at least you can in the states). If it's a bad dvd drive, HP should send you a replacment.

I like setarip_old's idea of posting a log of a failed burn. You mention above that you receive an I/O error while ripping as well:

Why not post a log of a failed rip. That way you don't have to waste another blank disc.

This could also be a copyguard problem. I've seen certain discs produce an i/o error when trying to rip. You might consider trying another program. There are plenty of postings recommending other programs. i.e., DVD Fab Decrypter, Vob blanker, Any DVD, etc.
