I have to ask a couple of questions to clear up some of the confusion I have regarding mkv and subtitles.
If I want to play an mkv file I should only need ffdshow and ...Gabest Matroska Splitter, correct? For the matroska splitter I simply download from Gabest and copy to windows\system32 folder and register it. Is this correct? No need to download or install anything else?
Now if I want to see subtitles in theory I simply now only need to download the Gabest vsfilter? It seems to me that the Gabest vsfilter works with vobsub does it not? So do I need to install vobsub as well? Or can I get away with copying the vsfilter into the windows\system32 folder, register it and that's it? There doesn't seem tobe any install files for the matroska splitter and vsfilter which is adding to the confusion.
I noticed that when I play an mkv file with subtitles in windows media player, I get a vobsub icon in my tray from which I can select the subtitles. Unfortunately WMP is the only player where the subs show up. I tried the haali splitter but I had pretty much the same problem, subs would only show up in WMP. Although with Haali if I played an avi file in WMP the icon would show up in the tray even if no subs were included, unlike Gabest which does not show up at all when no subs are found.
I really want to clean up my system and only keep what I need. Any help is appreciated.
