Hi.

I use the LAME ACM codec to create AVI files in VirtualDub.
Im pretty happy with that, but of course I have to use the "CBR" presets, since ABR/VBR MP3 in AVI is not a good idea. unfortunately there are very few CBR presets, most are ABR. I usually use "128kbps CBR 44Khz" or "96kbps CBR 32KHz". Nevertheless something like CBR @ 96kbs with 44KHz or CBR @ 56 with 22KHz (for movies that need high compression) would be very usefull to me. Is there a way to edit LAME ACM's presets or is it possible to add more presets for the next build?

It's all there!
Download the latest LameACM

Nope!
I've testes v3.97-Beta2 and v3.98-Alpha2

The only CBR mode for 44 KHz Stereo is 128 kbps :(
All CBR modes below 128 kbps are either not Stereo or not 44 KHz
Or am I missing something ???
Remember: I'm talking about the ACM codec, not the CLI encoder!

Of course I could export the PCM as Wave, then compress it with the CLI and finally mux it to the video. But that's not what I want to do...

unless you know programing, there's no other way to change it!
If you are using Windows XP, you are entitled to download Windows Media Player 10 installer
Use 7-zip to view the package, extract only "l3codecp.acm" from that package
rename it to l3codeca.acm, copy it and replace the l3codeca.acm in C:\Windows\system32

OR

the default l3codeca.acm bundled in XP can create up to 56 kbps, 22 khz, stereo?
It's better to use 32 khz for 96kbps stereo, it is the recommended mode,
In CLI, the default is also 32 kHz if a 44 kHz source is fed to it

If you insist to use 96 kbps, stereo, 44100 kHz, use Fraunhofer's MPEG Layer-3
Professional ACM bundled with WMP 10

Do you know, is the quality as good as LAME ???

//EDIT

Got it, seems to work :-)

It's the best if you listen it yourself, it is very easy to tell with such low bitrate.... Anyway, it's still better to use 32 kHz for 96kbps

Fraunhofer can perfome better than lame at lower bitrates, as it has intennsity stereo which lame is missing

This is a 128 kbps test.... FhG = Fraunhofer, I think AActive also use FhG encoder
