View Full Version : Problems with playback with DL Media after using PgcEdit and ImgBurn

I have burned a few DVD's using PgcEdit and ImgBurn but I am having some problems.

On my home dvd player the 1st layer plays perfect. But at the transition at the layer break it seems that the dvd skips and gets stuck.

I am using version 0.6.3beta4 of PgcEdit. I also verified that I have option to leave at least 32K of space between the IFO and BUP.

Does anyone have any idea? My home player is actually a Momitsu V880N with a replacement loader installed. I installed a lite-on dvd player so I know it can read the media I use.

I have found that if I skip past the layer break by jumping to a scene it plays fine. So the problems seems to be right at the layer break.

Anyone have any ideas?

Hi!

1) Have you tried playing it on another standalone player?

2) What brand and format of DL burnable media are you using?

I have not tried it in any of my other home dvd players as I don't believe they read burned dl media. But I will try asap.

I am using RiData DL+RW media.

The problems seems to occur right at the transition from one layer to another. The dvd rom in my home theater player is actually a brand new Lite-on dvd that I bought just last week. I replaced the loader with this one so it could read DL burned media. I have all the latest firmware and region free fix installed on that ROM.

Any ideas?

You should only use Verbatim DL+Rs. The layer break is the position on the disc where there are usually many errors with cheap media.
When doing the first tries on the new DL burning method with PgcEdit, I used Maxell DLs. My standalone player was unable to play the DVD just after the layer break, but jumping to another chapter was fine, exactly like for you.
Then I switched to Verbatim, and the problem was magically fixed!

(BTW, Ritech is among the worst brands.)

I just don't understand how this can be. My home dvd player is not your standard sony or panasonic store bought player. It is a Momitsu V880N. I have also modified it by taking out the loader/rom that came with it and replacing it with a Lite-on SOHD-16P9S. I can't imagine that this DVD rom can't read these dvds....but I guess there is always something.

Since I just bought 100 RiData media I need to find another work around - Or I would have just flushed a whole bunch of money down the toilet.

Any other ideas?

Answer: these DVDs are crap, and you cannot burn them correctly! Sorry.
The hardware used to play them can be as good as possible, if the DVD is not burned correctly, it will be difficult to read.

You could try to do a PI/PO test with KProbe or DVDInfoPro, if possible with another drive than your burner. You will probably see many problems just after the layer break.

Are there any other media that work besides verbatim? Hard to go from paying $1.6/unit to $3.50 per unit.

Ricoh are a bit better - but still not up to Verbatim's standards.

Still, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for.

I have also used a Philips, but I don't remember the real manufacturer. It was not bad, but almost as expensive as Verbatim.

The best I could get from the Ridata or Memorex DVD+R DL blanks was a playable backup with video break-up near the layerbreak. But to make use of your existing Ridata blanks you could try a few ideas:

- Change booktype from DVD+R DL to DVD-ROM in ImgBurn before burning.
- Test burning ISO with 32K gap OFF
- Use blank to back up episode DVD, where the layerbreak is likely to be in some extra VTS outside of the main video VTS
- Use blank to backup data, not video

Hope this helps.
