Is this a known issue of x264 ?

These are captured from a 30s 720p clips encodes at 8Mbps.

And what settings did you use? I'm just guessing, but for instance the default in-loop filter settings seem a bit strong for such a high bitrate.

x264 build396 profile-HQ-Slow loop(-3,-3)

A friend in other forum just told me x264 v32* - v384D has a simple AQ patch, with which could solve this at the cost of higher Quan.

that patch by Haali will reduce Quan for flat areas. it's for the blue sky blocks problem.
and that's not the finesolution for the loss of details at flat areas, i think.

haali's aq strongly reduced details in my tests, together with only being meant as a fix for the blueblock issue (that was fixed otherwise now), its surely not a solution for "lost details at high bitrate"

Would any of the mods mind approving the JPG. I'd like to see for myself.

How about switching the in-loop filter completely off (--nf)?

at 8mbps you cuould use -6,-6 or either switch the loop filter off.

The source frame is different than from xvid's and x264's

Deblocking might not change a thing. What you call details, I call it noise. Ok, the dress is slightly less textured. But the source is mpeg2, and mpeg4 asp does look like mpeg2, while avc doesn't. In that case, I don't mind it because x264's frame has less ringing.

What was the source bitrate, btw ?
