Please help. I cannot use WIndows Media 9 for Video or Audio. In WIndows Media Encoder, When I try to get to the settings it crashes with the XP Send Report message. When I try to encode to WMA with dbPowerAMP I get the same thing and it crashes when I try to click on Windows Media Audio v9.1. In ProCoder 2, and I try to select Windows Media File as the output format I get a message that says "Unknow error". Does anyone have any clue on how to fix this problem? The funny thing is, with WinAVI VideoConverter 7.1, I can encode but it uses WMV8 and WMA9.1. I would like to be able to use WMV9 and WMA9.1 in ProCoder and dbPowerAMP like before. Any ideas anyone?

I've tried that. I removed WMP 10 and put WMP 9 back. I installed the Windows Media 9 Format Runtime, I've tried everything I can think of. I can't get basically to the lists of profiles and settings to select how to encode video/audio so thus, I can't proceed with any program to encode since I can't choose my settings.

What is the resolution of the video file you want to encode?
When you open the file you want to encode in GraphEdit, what demultiplexer/codecs are used? Those will be used in WME, too.
If you try to encode a hidef (TS or PS) file and don't use Elecard v.3 demultiplexer/codecs, the WME will crash
(at least this is what is happening to me). I tried NVidia, Cyberlink, Intervideo and ATI codecs.
I can use NVideo codecs to encode SD video (but haven't done this for a while).
Did you install the 9.5 SDK? Do you use WinXP x32 or x64?

You mean Windows Media Player doesn't start? Or doesn't open a file for playback?
Do you use v.9 or 10? If it doesn't start, reinstall it.

Okay, it has NOTHING to do with the video because in dbpowerAMP when I select an MP3 (standard 4 minute song) and choose WIndows Media AUdio 9.1 from the list it crashes. I don't know how to fix this. I want to be able to use my windows media 9 codecs.
In fact, this is how it happened and I have no idea how. I have a folder with 260 songs in it. I used dbpoweramp to encode them all into MP3 at 128kbps. It took forever to finish but once it did. I re-opened dbpoweramp and went to select Windows Media Audio and it crashed. And right before this large encode of mine, it worked perfectly, in fact I tried to use it right before I did my LAME MP3 choice. I was trying to decide between codecs. I have no idea how this happend. Any ideas anyone?

The playback with WIndows Media Player is perfect, no problems there. The problem is ENCODING to Windows Media. It makes every program I have crash when it tries to either start encoding or see the selectable Windows Media profiles and/or settings dialogs.

...every program I have crash when it tries to either start encoding or see the selectable Windows Media profiles and/or settings dialogs.
This is the sequence I'd try:
1. Uninstall all players/codecs you have installed
2. You must have WinXP and SP2 with latest updates and DirectX
3. Install WMP10
4. Install WME
5. Install SDK 9.5
6. Install Elecard v.3 player/codecs
7. Make sure they are the default codecs for openning the files you want to encode.
And try again.
If you have played with different codecs already for a while,
I'd recomment to start from scratch: clean install of WinXP and SP2, etc.
I did this about a dozen times. It should work.

Do you have ffdshow installed? You might try uninstalling it.
I had the same problem as you, and solved it by re-installing windows :)
That was a happy experience.
I read later on somewhere that ffdshow could cause problems with windows media encoding, although the newer versions may not have this problem.

Thanks, I'm trying this now. I have one last question on this topic or crashing codecs. I can't get to my WAVE ACM selection screen where I choose the ACM codecs. It always crashes when it tries to open the box. I know why it happened but don't know how to solve it. I was using the LAME ACM MP3 codec to encode and then I left on that and installed the newer version of LAME ACM and now I can't open the ACM box anymore. How can I fix this?
