File size problem; changing bitrate doesn't help or affect anything, must quit xvid?!

I am having a strange oversizing problem. Whenever I do a 2-pass encoding with XVID I get huge files, way bigger than the 700mb file I'm trying to get. The AVI's are usually 1.4gigs+ in size. And it doesn't matter what I set the bitrate setting in XVID to, I can set it at 200kbps or 5000kbps and it still makes the same sized file. What is causing this? I tried reformatting and reinstalling the codec, but still the same problem.

I am using xvid 1.0.3 and VirtualDubMod 1.5.10.0

PS - when I do a single-pass encoding file sizes are perfect, but of course the quality isn't quite what I want it to be.

BTW seems that uninstalling XviD, cleaning the registry and reinstalling works :)

Sorry, but that didn't seem to work.

I tried uninstalling, cleaning any references to "xvid" in the registry, but still it doesn't work. Right now I'm using my freshly installed xvid 1.1 final along with VirtualDub-MPEG2 1.6.11, and my 700mb AVI has come out to be 2.840gigs.

PS - I had tried the search feature before, but didn't find anything that seemed like it described my problem. Maybe I shoulda just looked harder.

Anyways, any additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I am at a loss at what to do to fix the problem.

When you change the bitrate the size remains _exactly_ the same? What about the audio stream? An uncompressed 5.1 audio may be doing this.
