I just noticed this new entry on our CES blog. Here you see Mattzog (Tech-Ops), AdrianB (ex-Mac developer, now working on DivX Media Format), and Chris (uber smart guy - yes, that's his actual title) getting zapped on film.

would be better if divx would use a java plugin than making people install an external browser one :(

A Java decoder would be a little slow wouldn't it? Especially for HD. The decoder we use has various MMX/SSE optimizations that I presume you just can't do on a Java VM, plus I bet the cache efficiency on a VM is not as good given that you have to run the VM as well as the actual program.

Sure it can, there have been plenty of examples that show you can write something with comparable peformance to C in Java - but what about assembly using the CPUs enhanced instruction sets? Although I haven't personally checked into it, since Java is an abstraction of the hardware my assumption would be that you can't embed these instructions directly.
