Hi!which one should I use to make copies of my dvd's.It's a matter of compatibility. You should use whichever one your burner can burn (Many burners can burn both DVD-R and DVD+R, but some burners can burn only one or the other) and whichever one your playback hardware (standalone DVD player, PC, portable DVD player, PSP, XBox, etc.) will play.
To determine the capabilities/limitations of your DVD burner, as well as media compatibility, go to:
www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdwriters
(If necessary, open the Device Manager in the Control Panel to determine the make and model number)
To determine the capabilities/limitations of your specific brand and model of standalone DVD player, as well as media compatibility, go to:
www.dvdrhelp.com/dvdplayers

I am no expert, but DVD+R seems to be more compatible with the stand-alone players I have access to. I seem to have read something about the reflectivity being more similar to silver pressed discs than DVD-Rs. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable can weigh in on the matter.

I am no expert, but DVD+R seems to be more compatible with the stand-alone players I have access to.The fact is that it's the other way around, the DVD-R format follows the DVD-Forum standard and was first so is compatible with more standalone DVD-players, ...however with newer DVD+R bruners you can set the bitsetting/booktype to "DVD-ROM" before burning which will make them just as compatible as the the DVD-R format.
Maybe more importantly today than bitsetting/booktype is the DVD-media brand and quality you use, ...you get what pay for :p

In fact, DVD+R is a later format that overcomes some of the shortcoming of DVD-R. Also, the booktype is a function of the dvd burner, not of the media. See this thread (http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/113) for one of the more cogent articles comparing the two formats (DVD+R wins!)

Hi!Also, the booktype is a function of the dvd burner, not of the media.Actually, as far as I know, while SETTING the booktype is a function of the burner, ONLY DVD+Rs can have this function applied. You cannot set the bit of a DVD-R...

setarip is generally correct in this one for all practical purposes. However, it can be done with a trick. But it's not worth it as it makes for non-standard DVD.
