i noticed that after i DVD Shrink a dvd backup copy of a multi-dvd series set, if i use the highest compression, that i could fit most the episodes on 1 dvd rather than the 3 or 4 they come on. Or at least backup them up to indivudal mpg movies on my hard drive.
How could i do that?
For Instance, if i just wanted to take the simpsons dvd and make 5 mpg files on my hard drive for each episode. Each episode is like 3 or 4 different chapters. Im a n00b so its probably pretty easy. any help would be appreciated...thnx

Hi!
You could do that by using DVD Shrink in "Re-author" mode

If i wanted to rip episodes individually, the easiest possible way i can think of would be with Shrink.
.
First, go into its preferences and uncheck the box "split vobs into 1gb chunks".
.
Second, click on movie only and select titleset/episode (4 episodes = min 4 titleset) to figure out which is witch just click on it (no need to drag) and view in window.
.
Third, once you've figured out what you want drag it over and start Shrink. You'll end up with 1 vob file (might be 900mb, or 2gb). Do this for each episode and you'll have your seperated files.
.
NOTE: Don't forget to go back into preferences when your done and check the split vobs box, or next time you do a movie you'll end up with a 4.3gb file.

excellent thank you! now i have a question about what format i should convert these vob files into. Is there a format that will not lose any quality when i convert it?
and is there a way in shrink you can use the highest amount of compression wihtout losing any quality? After i shrink it i can see it get all pixelated when there is movement.

You should be able to view the vob with really any mediaplayer you want (windows mediaplayer, powerdvd, etc.) Just doubleclick on the vob.
.
DVD's are mpeg2 files(that means there already mpg video files) with either ac3 or pcm audio(not mpg audio), just demultiplex (pull apart) the vob. Depending on what app you use you'll end up with either an .mpv or .m2v video file and an .ac3 or .wav audio file.
If you want a real mpg file you'll need to convert the audio to a .mpa audio file and then multiplex (put together) that with your video file (mpv, m2v) and you'll have your mpg.
I know you said your a n00b so you should take a real good look at the GUIDES (http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm) section and familiarize yourself with Doom9's search function.

You'll never be able to shrink without losing quality, it's all about shrinking with the least amount of noticable difference. A lot of people convert their DVD's to AVI files (xvid, divx) down to about 700mb files with very little noticeable difference in quality, and keep those on their computers. There are even some standalone players that read AVI's right off the disc. Once again check out the GUIDES (http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm) section to learn how.

so i think i have a pretty good system now. i got it down ripping each episode to its own vob file and then converting from their. but i wasnt sure if i should use the compression with dvd shrink, and then convert to divx with 100% quality, or if i should rip from dvd shrink with no compression, and then compress with divx at the recomended %75....
is either method going to be pretty much the same in quality and file size?

No. Compressing with dvd shrink will double your total time and make the divx look worse as well; divx's quality option is unrelated to dvd shrink's, and they can't be used in conjunction.

well i mean i just want to convert dvds to divx. so im using dvd shrink to create the vob files, and then converting them to divx. So i wondering if i should do the compression with dvd shrink or divx? right now im only compressing with dvd shrink and just converting to divx straight across with no compression.

Don't do that, you're going thru an extra step.
First of all if you want to convert from DVD(even multi-episodes) to Divx/Xvid this is the wrong forum to ask for help, also try to read the guides.
Second, just rip each episode with Decrypter on IFO mode to seperate folders then try AutoGK, Staxrip, avi.Net or any other one-click application to convert each episode to the format of choice(personally I recommend Xvid).
Cheers!
