This might be old news, if so I apologize to those who already know this.
About three years ago I first tried to copy "The Stoned Age". A movie that went right to cable and rental, very low budget but I think it just freakin funny as hell.
My settop played the disc fine, but I could never get it copied or even PLAY on the computer. I tried for weeks different approaches.
For the past two years or so I have been authoring my own DVD's from home movies. Only recently have I gotten into the details of just what you can do when you master a DVD for replication. During my learning process it came to me, what if the DVD only THINKS it's encrypted? Set top players will play encrypted and non-encrypted discs, as will software. But what if the software gets hung up on a dvd that tells the player that it's encrypted but it's not?
I did a raw file copy of the audio and video folders to the HD and voila - the movie plays just fine!
Burn to a DVD, bingo! Plays on computer and set top.
Due to lack of production quality, they protected the disc!
