View Full Version : No sound in Besweet WAV > AC3 output file

I've tried dozens of attempts to convert an VirtualDub video capture I made weeks ago to MPEG-2 DVD-Video format. It's been very frustrating as I can't get any approach to work.

My latest problem is with getting the Besweet v6.0 GUI to convert a .WAV made with TMPGEnc to an AC3 file with audio that will play back. I've tried 4-5 approaches, and none of the output files want to play in either Winamp or WMP.

Here's a brief history of this specific problem:
-------------------------------------------

* Ripped a TV show to an 320x240 AVI file using my old ATI All-In-Wonder 128 Rage capture card. (Have since upgraded to the PVR-150 with a 720x480 MPEG-2 hardware encoder.)

* The audio and video were out of sync, so I used YAAI AVIInfo to calculate a bitrate to re-sync the audio & video. Then I used TMPGEnc with a specificed CBR bitrate to create two properly synced M3U & WAV files for an NTSC DVD-Video.

* The audio quality of the WAV file TMPGEnc produced was terrible for some reason, and multiple approaches at creating a good one all failed. So I used VirtualDub to export a proper sounding WAV file to replace the one TMPGenc created. The idea being to then use those 2 files to generate a DVD-Video with TMPGEnc Author.

* TMPGEnc Author complained that the PCM WAV file VDub produced wasn't 'linear', and wouldn't accept it.

* To convert that VDub WAV to something TMPGEnc Author would accept, I downloaded and set up Besweet v1.4, BeSweetGUI v0.6, and BS_AC3 v0.1 AC3 encoder.

* I then followed this BeSweet guide on the VideoHelp.com website (http://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/129419.php) to convert VDub's WAV file to an AC3 audio file. I also tried the procedure on the WAV TMPEnc had created in it's M2V/WAV file output.

-------------------------------------------

But nither Winamp or Windows Media Player can play any audio in the resulting AC3 files. And when authoring a set of DVD-Video files with TMPGenc Author, there was no sound in the resulting video.

I've been down a lot of roads trying to get that old VDub AVI capture file onto a DVD I can play on a stand alone DVD player, all to no avail. I've used methods involving NeroVision Express, ULead DVD Workshop, TMPGEnc and a dozen little utilities from the Doom9 downloads... and I'm still stuggling.

I also tried using the BeLight GUI, applying as many of the procedures listed in the VideoHelp.com BeSweet GUI guide as I could. But the resulting AC3 files all have the same problem with no playable audio in the output AC3 files.

So I'm wondering of the problem somewhere in the BeSweet v1.4 files I've set up.

Any help figuring our what I'm doing wrong trying to get BeSweet GUI to convert this WAV to a playable AC3 file would be greatly appreciated.

Thx,

TS

When you do "Save wav" in VirtualDub, the Audio is in "Direct stream copy" or in "Full processing mode"?

You need "Full processing mode" to output WAV PCM.

Hi!Then I used TMPGEnc with a specificed CBR framerate to create two properly synced M3U & WAV files for an NTSC DVD-Video.You should instead use "TMPGEnc" to create ONE MPEG-2 file - which would include DVD-compliant .M2V video and .MP2 [MPEG1 Layer II] audio - that will be accepted for input by "TMPGEnc DVD Author"...

And I did go that route the 1st go-around to get the AVI down to 2.1GB to author 2 videos to one 4.3GB DVD. But darned it... I didn't make notes of what the problem was I had with the output file. It had something to do with the MPEG-1 Layer 2 audio it encoded. For some reason I needed uncompressed audio (or thought I needed it) because of some problem I was having.

I'll have a go at that approach again... but would like to sort out what's going on with BeSweet at this point too for the experience.

You need "Full processing mode" to output WAV PCM.Hmmm.... I think I set it to "Direct Stream Copy", but I'm not sure at this point. But the problem with BeSweet, and no audio in its AC3 output file exists both when processing the original TMPGEnc WAV output file, and the WAV file VDub produced.

I've got to download another copy of BeSweet, BeSweet GUI and or BS_ac3enc. I got BeSweet from http://dspguru.doom9.net/ ... but I got BS_ac3enc.zip and a couple of versions of BeSweetGUI from elsewhere on the net. I've found BeSweetGUI0.6b61.zip and AC3Machinev0.41.zip on dspguru's site. So Ill set those up and report back.

I found a copy of ac3enc.dll in the beta version of BeSweet v1.5b31 that's different from the one in the BS_ac3enc.zip pack I download last night. But it wouldn't play in Winamp, and see now that Winamp needs an AC3 decoder plugin.

The file I just created with ac3enc.dll from BeSweet v1.5b31 does play now in Windows Media player, unlike the ones I was making last night with the other version of ac3enc.dll. So that seems to have been the source of the problem.

Hi!You should instead use "TMPGEnc" to create ONE MPEG-2 file - which would include DVD-compliant .M2V video and .MP2 [MPEG1 Layer II] audio - that will be accepted for input by "TMPGEnc DVD Author"...Okay... I remember now. I did go that way, and it failed because of poor audio output quality.

TMPGEnc offers 2 CBR encoding options that I needed to set a custom bitrate for sizing the output file down to fit on a DVD-Video:

1: CBR Linear PCM Audio
2: CBR MPEG-1 Layer II Audio (MP2)

The 1st outputs a m2v and wav files. The 2nd outputs one mpg file with the audio and video muxed.

I tried the 2nd option 1st, as it's always been the easiest to transfer over to my other DVD authoring programs. But the problem was that the quality of the MP2 audio TMPGEnc produced was really crappy compared to the great sound of the original AVI!

Why's that??

So I was left with giving the 1st option a try, which gave me the 2 files, mv2 and wav. But that wav file sounded like crap too. What's with TMPGEnc's audio encoding?? Must have something to do with the audio in the ATI All-In-Wonder 128 AVI capture that TMPGEnc couldn't deal with.

So at least I had a properly sized m2v video file to author to DVD-Video. And I have finally been able to successfully convert the PCM WAV VDub exported (the one TMPGEnc refused to accept as not being 'linear') to a working AC3 audio file, and have been able to use that instead of the distored TMPGEnc WAV to author to acceptable DVD-Video with TMPGEnc Author.

Haven't yet retried exporting a WAV from VDub in both "Full processing mode" and "Direct stream copy" to see if one of them would be 'linear', and acceptable to TMPGEnc Author.

EDIT:Tried tebasuna51's approach to set VDub to "Full processing mode" before exporting the WAV file. But TMPGEnc Author still complained about it's not being 'linear'.
