Hey!
I am very interested to know what exactly goes through your mind when choosing a resolution for backing up both widescreen and fullscreen DVDs to XviD.

For example:

-Do you base your resolution choice on the bits/pixel*frame value?
-Do you base your resolution on Compressibilty Check results?
-Do you choose a resolution that minimises the Aspect Error % ?
-Perhaps you have another method you use?
-Perhaps the amount of action and fast scenes in the movie affects your decision?

Would be very interested to hear what you saY!
Thanks

I base it on whether the little window is grey, yellow, or red, and how much aspect ratio error there is. Say like if it's .20 and the aspect error is +/- 3, but I move it to .18 and the aspect error is +/- 1.5 I'll use the one that sends it into the yellow, usually this doesn't seem to be a problem, and I still get a good rip.

I base it on:

PAL DVD = 720x576.
Vertical Resolution is 576 pixels.

4/3 x 576 = 768.
16/9 x 576 = 1024

4:3 video I encode at 768x576
16:9 video I encode at 1024x576

Of course there are other ratios for movies:
1.85:1 = 1024x544
2.35:1 = 1024x432

I try to follow 720 for 16.9 and 640 for 4:3...I also use Auto GK so I set the size usually for 1/4 DVD for 1:45 - 2:15 unless it is an action or SciFi movie with a lot of depth and 1/3 DVD for higher (lOTR or equivilant); 1/5 DVD for almost everything else. I can go with a larger size with better quality because I'm putting these on my home media server and not disk.
