To all main DivX 6 devs, please read this!

Hi, I want to ask all main DivX 6 developers one little question: When you guys include in Home Theater profile, bu default, support for Q-pel and Global Motion Compenzation in 3 dots, instead one.

If you include and change a little that specification of profile Home Theatre, the firms who make standalone DVD/DivX players will be forced to, finally, include support for these wonderful features, such as Q-pel and GMC.

Please give me a very long answer, if you need to explain this much better.

Sorry Sagittaire but i think you are blinded by your Matrices test, seems your results interfer with your Visual recognition of a Scene, but there is a big difference in Visual Perception and Detail Preservation with Qpel sure it doesn't really matter for Hi-Definition Content but for DVD Backup it does and there is a clear Visual difference.

How do you know that for sure? Do you talk with DivX devs, or...

About GMC 3-Warp, I think that Xvid 1.1 use 3-Warp GMC, so I don't see the reason why DivX Labs won't include it in fiture codecs, like DivX Pro 6.2

No metric test for QPel ... only my eyes. For high quant IMO QPel decrease really the quality and for low quant I don't see really big difference.

GMC is a pure motion vector application. You can use Metric for test GMC's efficiency and metric say: GMC (1WP or 3WP) are useless in most case ...

If we added these features to the Home Theater profile when you encoded Home Theater profile content it would not play on millions of Home Theater certified devices.

Profiles are not about forcing manufacturers to add features, they are to ensure a reliable playback experience. We evaluated the features we wanted when we created the profiles, as well as considering which features manufacturers could implement with reasonable cost/benefit trade-off. This is one of the reasons you can pick up very good DivX ceritified DVD players for less than $70.

Yes, you are partly right, but you forgeting facts that all manufacturers release new firmwares for their standalone players.

They just release new firmware, and device it play any video file with any profile, right.

"Most people", if you are talking about the general consumer and not the technically orientated, don't know what firmware is and would probably not feel comfortable in upgrading it.

Some devices could never support features like 3pt GMC and QPel even if you upgraded the firmware. Think about devices with a low cost/low performance CPU that use dedicated IC's for performing complex/computationally intensive functions, or devices with fixed decoding pipelines/architectures.

Exactly and that's whats wrong in this whole "DivX Ecossystem" even players that have identical Chips don't get supported anymore after the next Product cycle starts, so old Buyers gonna never see DMF they have to buy a complete new Player for this, in this region DivX Inc really should try to create much more transparency like a safety contract for the customers so that MediaTek and others Gurantee that new features will also implemented in older Firmware of the same SOC Generation. It's just a matter of porting that new code over.
