I have an mpeg ripped from a Laserdisc that has some very noticable blotchiness, mostly visible in the background colors (black, blue, etc.) Now, the TMPG has a "soften block noise" feature, but I'm not sure how to use it (intra block? non-intra block?) Also, there's the noise reduction filter, which I also don't know how to use. But, of course, I don't want to sacrifice too much sharpness.
Unfortunately, unlike the other filters in TMPG, the NR and the soften block noise changes don't show up on the preview window. Which means that the only way I can experiment with different settings is to encode several times for 5 hours at a time, and then check the results.
Any suggestions?
(on edit): I'm encoding to 720x480, DVD-5 media (so I'm using an average bitrate of ~4.5Mb)
