View Full Version : Subtitle Question with .mkv

I used MeGUI to encode a movie using x264 to .mkv container. I wanted to add subtitles so I extracted the subtitle track I wanted and got an .idx and .sub file. In MeGUI I did everything as normal, then from AutoEncode I selected my files size then Queue, then select my AC3 track and then for subtitle browsed to my .idx/sub file.
Move encoded fine and plays fine but I can't figure out how to turn on the subtitles. Did I even do the subtitles correctly?

Sounds like your missing the vsfilter. you use haali's latest media splitter for mkv right? it should control it correctly as long as vsfliter is installed in the system32 directory. At least that's what I can think of at the moment.

I should add that previously when I wanted to burn in forced subs I was using GK to encode to .mkv in x264 format. I can still view the forced subs in these movies. However if I encode the English subtitle track to say Wedding Crashers, when I watch the movie I see no way of turning on the subs.
I'm using TT and the latest version of ffdshow. I tried turning on the subtitle option in ffdshow put it didn't do anything.
The other question I have is how can I get forced subs to automatically show and yet keep normal subs off unless I want to turn them on.

Actually I'm using the Gabest spliter. When I installed the Haali splitter my .mkv files wouldn't play so I went back.
I don't see a vsfilter in my system32 folder. I only see one in GK folder.

I downloaded the latest version of vsfilter and copied it to my system32 folder. But still no subs.

I have no knowledge of the inner workings of gabests splitter. I know that .sub works with haali's however.

I posted this in another thread but when I install haali's splitter my mkv files no longer play. As soon as I uninstall it they work again. Not sure why?

Did you happen to use a codec pack? Perhaps a filter conflict. Have you ever tried to use graphedit or gspot to try and render it? see where the file is going through?

Have you tried using Vobsub or playing the movie in VLC?

The movies can play in mplayer classic and windows media player but as soon as I use Theatertek it craps out.
I haven't tried graphedit as I've never used it before.
WHen installing Haali do you still need a vsfilter.dll? I noticed when installing haali it doesn't appear to install a vsfilter in the system32 folder.
Where do I get the vsfilter if I need it.

Well vsfliter isn't needed unless you want subs. Then you have to set haali's to automatically load vsfilter(it'll load it from the system directory). Then subs will play. With your mkv problem with haali's does it play in any player or does it fail everywhere?

It plays fine in windows media player. I can't see why theatertek wouldn't be able to play it.

Here's what Graphedit shows

It sounds like you didn't register it. Try "regsvr32 vsfilter.dll", since you already have a copy in system32. (Haali's doesn't install it that I'm aware of, it just has the option of loading it.) Then you should be able to get subs with haali's or gabest's in any directshow player.

you need to enable the substream you want to see in the haali media splitter tray icon

I tried registering the vsfilter, still didn't work.
you need to enable the substream you want to see in the haali media splitter tray icon
Bond, so does this mean that until I enable the substream (I have no idea what this means but all my movies are encoded with the English AC3 stream only), I don't get any pic at all?

if your rightclick on the tray icon of the haali media splitter you will see the different streams in the mkv and you will see that the subtitle stream is not ticked by default (and therefore not shown)
enable the subtrack there and it should be shown

Bond, when playing any mkv files I don't get anything.
For ex. I open up an Wedding_Crashers.mkv in TT. I see my hard drive start flashing but stops. TT stays blank. If I minimize it, the Haali splitter does not show up in the bottom tray like it does when I play an avi file.

Am I correct in thinking that I must use the following items.
Haali Splitter, VSFilter, and FFDshow. Am I correct in this?

Isn't easier to install their codec pack? Matroska Pack full has less than 4mb and come with it an fewer more things that you may need. Or install the Lite plus FFDShow.

Already have that installed. Doesn't help though.
I'm surprised I can't get this resolved with so many experts around. Doesn't appear anyone is using TT except for me. But it should work since it does work with Gabest splitter.

Still sounds for me, that the filter is not registerd correctly. Try regdrop (http://www.addisonsw.com/revsqu.htm) for registration.
