hi there,
im hoping this is the right forum and that my question hasnt been covered before (i did search but found nothing)
i have 3 movies sitting on my hard drive, all R2:
Cool Money
Saving Face
8mm2
which i cant compress with DVD Shrink to pop nicely onto a DVD5 (Shrink says unable to compress). i removed all the protections on the files when i was ripping them, i tried demuxing and remuxing them with VOBedit and using nero recode to compress them but no luck
are there any DVDs out there that simply cant be compressed? if there are im amazed as ive compressed a huge movie like Return of the King with no problem and none of these movies are larger than 6GB
any help would be great, thanx

Hi!
Is it that DVD Shrink is indicating no compression is possible, or is it generating an error message?
If there is an error message generated, what is it?
If error messages are being generated and if these are fairly recent releases, they probably contain either newer "ARccOS" or "RipGuard" copy protection, that DVD Shrink cannot directly process...

hi there,
there is no error message. Shrink just says that no compression is possible. which is strange, as i always thought that any video can be compressed if the bitrate is lowered
thanx

1) What method(s) and program(s) did you use to rip your original, purchased DVDs to your hard drive?
2) Did the program(s) generate ANY unusual messages and/or errors? If so, what were they?
3) I believe that two of the titles you've mentioned are SONY releases and, therefore, very likely have some form of "ARccOS" copy protection which, if not properly removed, could possibly lead to the situation you've described

thanx for the quick response,
1. i used DVD Shrink to originally copy the dvds to my hard drive, when i received the 'no compression possible' message i decided to go ahead and copy it anyway without compression. it seemed to work just fine, like usual
2. no errors or unsual things happened during to rip
3. once i had the files on the hard drive i also ran them through 'free dvd' (no protections found) and pgc edit with the ARccOS plugin (again no protections found)

none of these movies are larger than 6GB1) How large does DVD Shrink indicate each of them to be?
2) Did you use DVD Shrink to rip the "Full DisK" of each DVD to your hard drive, or did you go into "Re-author" mode to rip the movie-only to your hard drive?

Shrink indicates the movies are between 5400-5600MB for the main movie only, which is what i ripped in re-author mode with one subtitle stream
when i went into reauthor mode, shrink displayed the titles. i then dragged over the main movie title and the size stayed exactly the same. ive had this problem before and it can sometimes be corrected by restarting shrink or re-booting. both of which i tried to no avail, and then i get the 'no compression' possible message

This does sound unusual indeed. Since you state that you first used DVD Shrink to rip the DVDs to your hard drive, it would seem that they either don't have "ARccOS" or "RipGuard" copy protection - or they have a newer version that's not being properly detected.
As an experiment, you might try re-ripping the original, purchased DVDs using DVD Decrypter v.3.5.4 and see if it generates any informational or error messages. If you are successful, then see if DVD Shrink will compress these rips.

Would doing a simple "process" with VobBlanker be helpfull at all. Import in set target process.
