Hello, thanks in advance to those that read my lengthy post:
I am trying to make my DVD library streamable over Windows Media Center Extenders since I have all my movies stored on HDD right now (all as DVD ISOs which I mount via Daemon Tools which won't stream).
My end goal is to have all my movies in the same DVD quality with AC-3 encoding, but as .mpg files instead of DVD ISO images, this way they are streamable to my Xbox360s around the house from the media server. This all works as planned except that my wife and her family's english skills are not quite up to mine and they need the English closed caption data for the hearing impaired. However, when I'm watching a movie by myself I don't want the captions, so they need to be in the standard system where the TV (or in this case Xbox360 can show or hide them).
MPG2 seems to handle embedded closed captioning data in both the analog and digital audio streams (not DVD subtitles). Using compatible TVs or Media Center Extenders, closed captioning is preserved and you are able to toggle them on or off at will. Also, Windows Media Player 10 can show or hide closed caption data when playing a DVD via the Tools/Options-Languages dialog. The DVD Player I have installed is the latest version of WinDVD, which I believe is what is picking up the .VOB file and playing it.
Because I have all the original DVDs and their ISO images, I can Demux them with AnyDVD or DVD Decrypter into their original VTS folders, or create a single large .VOB file (which can be renamed to a .mpg file) so I can Demux them but I have not found a way to get the .mpg file into a state where the CC data actually shows up when toggled on (WMP also supports displaying of CC data as an option, and it shows up in DVR-MS files as well as TV, DVD, etc) but not the renamed .mpg files or even the un-renamed .VOB files (it does show under VTS if I select VTS instead of VOB in the WinDVD app.)
One of my problems is that I don't clearly understand who's role it is to find a display the closed caption data. I assume that since I have the correct x20, etc closed caption streams enabled in the ripper, they do exist in the VOB file. So does this mean that the WinDVD codec running inside WMP or the WinDVD UI shell is the one that can't properly find them and display them? This is the same codec that Windows MCE2K5 uses to stream to the Xbox360 MCE Extender I believe...
So, of the options available to me, transcoding is not what I am looking for in that I am not trying to split or shrink the video file, in fact, I want to preserve all the picture quality of the original DVD (I don't care about the bonus materials, menus, etc though). Also available to me as an option is the ability to render the subtitle or CC data directly into the picture as permanent subtitles but this means I can't disable it and it also would require a full transcode with quality loss. In the end, I think I need to find a way to Demux the VTS/VOBs into smaller parts and then mux them back into a .VOB/.mpg file such that the CC data is actually showing up. It seems that VOB files and MPG files are not the same thing, but since a renamed VOB file works perfectly in every other regard for streaming over my Media Center 2005 server, I guess what I need in the end is a VOB file that, when played in WMP10 for example, displays the closed caption data (when that option is enabled in WMP).
So in summary, the proof of concept that I am trying to achieve is this:
1 - rip a DVD that contains English ClosedCaption data via AnyDVD, SmartRipper, or DVDdecrypter or ???
2 - play the VOB or MPG file in WinDVD or WMP10 and be able to show closed caption data either when muted or when the option is enabled manually.
If I can achieve this, I am sure it will solve what I am looking for. :)
