What do you think of Pinnacle Studios 10 for DV to DVD?

Hi,

I was wondering what you thought about the Pinnacle Studios 10 program for a complete DV to DVD conversion. It seems very good because it can capture, edit, encode, and author the dvd all in one. How would you compare the quality to a combination of Adobe Premiere Pro (just for capture, and minor editing), procoder2 (for the encode), some audio compression program, and another authoring program?

Studio 10 is full of features & nice effects for the price esspecialy PLUS version

but stability with long footage is sometimes a problem, if you are working with few videos that are 2h+ long studio 10 randomly closes/crashes

it is my expirience on my intel 3.06 htt / 1gb ram / 500+ GB hdds
on the same box premiere pro no problems whatsoever ;)

I was wondering more on it's ability to encode from DV to MPEG2 and author and do it all within one program, not so much the editing.

Adobe premiere pro is more of a professional tool with lot of options and highly flexible. While the pinnacle studio 10 would be for home users. Pinnacle liquid would be a product that can be compared with Adobe premier. Have used all the products. My favourite is adobe premier. But if price is the main criteria and you do not do much editing then go for Studio 10. Its a great buy at that price.

Adobe premiere would require adobe encore as well for DVD creation. Would be more sophisticated than the simple one click approach that studio 10 takes to capture,edit and make DVDs. However I would say never to consider Studio 10 if you plan to do some serious editing and movie making.

For the one button solution home user level you can't beat it. However I have found a few other side effects that rendered Studio 10 Plus useless for me.

1. It is a pig when loading it and doing editing compared to Studio 9.4
2. If you enable DivX in Studio 10 it decides to overwrite whatever DivX insallation you have, replace it with DivX 5.21 and you just lost your DivX 6.1 freeby installation that was available on DivX's 25 annversary.

Personaly I like the quality and flexibility that comes with a DV to MPEG2 encode using AVISynth and CCE. Then a separate DVD authoring using DV Lab. Each of these programs does one thing best compared to the swiss army knife approach. But you also need to consider the quality of your source. No good t use professional tools if the source is no good. Like the GIGO principle.

Ok you guys are kind of all missing what I was trying to say. I didn't even know premiere could do DV to MPEG2 encoding. I was just gonna use it to capture. Mainly I'm wondering about how well pinnacle can do this encoding compared to the professional route of AviSynth and CCE (or Procoder2 as I did once before, I don't know if that's such a great one either) with respect to QUALITY.

If the difference is very very very minimal, I would rather take the easy way out with the simple, clean (or at least apparently) solution where I don't have to worry about what all the complicated settigns for AviSynth are for.

Yet, I would still like more information on the most professional method out there so I can look into it and check just how complicated it is. (So if anyone can provide any links to a tutorial of what they think is the best way quality-wise?)

Two questions:

On the Studio 10 Box its says you need WIn XP. It won't work with Win NT?

I used Studio DV in the past. (love the smartsound) I used it to compile my DVD. It only recoded the AVI at transitions. Then I used external encoder to convert to MPEG 2. Does need Studio 10 still allow you to do this?

On the 25th anniversary DivX offered just for that one day free downloads of their Create DivX bundle, basically a free license.

Sure I still have the DivX 6.1, SN and all, put Pinnacle when it starts will ignor your DivX installation and reinstall & start DivX 5.21. Pinnacle support verified the fact that Studio 10 doesn't support DivX 6.*

The quality issue is in the eye of the beholder AND depends on your source. DV is a high quality format and only your eyes can tell you if the difference between a CCE encode and Pinnacle encode is worth the time and effort. The next guy can't live with the artifacts he notices and will only do CCE, AVISynth filters, but then that is his perception.

CCE Basic costs about $50 I believe, the MPEG encoder in Pinnacle Studio 10 which is just a bit more expensive will not reach the same quality in one persons perception and it makes no difference in another perons perception.

Better then & greater quality are tough questions to answer :)

How about Sony Vegas Movie Studio 6.0 Platinum? I have heard some very good things about it.

Sonic ReelDVD seems a good contender as well.
