I just installed for testing purpose the new final of XviD beside the last ffdshow build. When configurating ffdshow it gives me the option to use XviD for decoding XVid movies. Does this kind of configuration make sence? Like it because this way i have still all the other great option of ffdshow while playing a XVid movie.

xvid is a mpeg-4 encoder
ffdshow is a mpeg-4 decoder

therefore ffdshow can decode xvid, easy as that :)

It certainly makes sense. I let ffdshow decode XviD too, so I can use all the bells and whistles of ffdshow while playback.

Sorry folkes we misunderstood us. In ffdshow - codecs, i have under XvID the option to select libavcodec or, when XvID installed, XviD. Question is, makes sence to select XvID so that ffdshow uses the Xvid 1.1 final codec or are there any known incompatibilities. Or on other hand using the XvID codec in ffdshow has positiv aspects?

To me, it doesn't matter, both decoders Xvid and libavcodec does the job great

actually.. if you change the setting to XviD.. it uses the XviD code from inside ffdshow. However, that's just the decoding part.. postprocessing is still done via whatever method you set it to.. not the XviD postprocessing.

Is there any actual difference between the two? Why is this a selectable option? Is one somehow better than the other?

I think what doom9 means is it liks the library for xvids decoder when compiling ffdshow. it's basically xvids internal decoder used under ffdshow. the difference is probably very little. I'd have to do a benchmark test between decoding using xvid and default but I suspect there to be very little difference.

Thanks Manao. Very interesting results. I think it had been pointed out many times before that ffdshow was the fastest but I never had anything other than my own experience to point it out. Does qpel still require you use the xvid idct in ffdshow( unfortunately my parents machine doesn't have any clips I can use to test it myself) ?
