XviD --crf

Are there any plans to add a constant rate factor (crf) mode to xvid 1.2?

If not I might be tempted to hack in a quick and dirty pseudo-crf mode :>

and quant mode with XviD.

crf mode in x264 is constant quant mode encoding (with ratio/offset for I/P frame)

qp mode in x264 is constant quant for all frame

crf mode is constant quality mode for x264, quant mode is constant quality for XviD or DivX

Not at all, Sagittaire. Quantizers behave the same way with mpeg4 asp and avc. Constant rate factor is different from constant quantizer, because when encoding at constant rate factor, you end up with a file encoded as though you'd done two passes ( meaning, doing a two passes encoding aiming at the bitrate you just got should give roughly - not exactly - the same file ).

Two passes encoding has never aimed to reach a constant quantizer, but a constant quality ( or even better put, a constant quality / size tradeoff, which is exactly what rate factor is about ). So, in the end, having crf in XviD would definetely have its used.
