ive been encoding to Xvid with gordian knot. the input files is about 1gb and i encode it to 175mb. My output files are one 16mb and another 25mb file. ive also get a vdubmod error

Starting up: Virtualdubmod build 2540/release
AVI: opening file "D:\Program Files\Family guy\Family Guy season 1
\Family guy season 1-Disc 2\peter peter caviar eater.avs"
AVI: Avisynth detected. Extented error handling enabled
beginning dub operation

anyone got any ideas
thanks

:logfile: -- and if you could capture the actual error message from vdubmod, that would be helpful. "vdubmod error" does not help us at all.

If the vdubmod error message goes by too quickly, see if it is posted in your Event Logs (assuming you're running Windows NT/2000/2003/XP).

i think i may have found the problem but not sure. i did a compressibility test and it was 15% when it should have been about 60% to 80%. Can this cause undersizing and spliting of files??

Your first pass did not complete properly. Open the .avs file in VirtualDubMod. Use File...Information. Do you have 33896 frames? Scroll through the content. Is it all there?

If so, then the first pass encoding failed after getting only 66% thru the content. If you re-run your encdoding, does it fail at the exact same point, or a different point?

Usually, unexplained failures that do not repeat are caused by hardware stability problems -- most often, heat driven CPU problems due to the stress of encoding applications, or memory problems. Are you overclocking? If so, reset your PC to factory specs. For further hardware analysis help, see http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=54130

i re-did the encoding and still had the same problem....Did the log show the exact same frame number, 22518, or a different frame number?... Are u sure its not to do with the compressibilty test?Quality: 0.401 bits/(pixel*frame).
CompCheck3: 0.000 bits/(pixel*frame).
CompCheck5: 0.480 bits/(pixel*frame).Unless I am misreading this, your selected b/p*f value is 83% of the b/p*f maximum value determined by your compressibility test. Best practice may vary, but 83% is reasonable. This log, at least, does not show the 15% you described above....pls need help!!!In order for us to help you, please, answer the questions I've already asked: When you open the .avs file in VirtualDubMod manually, how many frames are shown in File....Information? 33896? Can you scroll through the entire content without trouble? When you re-ran the encoding, did the log show only 22518 frames analyzed in the first pass, as shown in the log you've posted above, or did it show a different frame count? (This is the 3rd time I've asked this particular question, since I've asked it in this same posting already. This is key to determining if your problem is content related, or hardware related.)

ok sorry about that.
ok
1.yes there is 33896 frames shown
2.yes i can scroll without trouble
3.it showed 33896

Another thing
i followed this guide exactly. ( except for the resolution ) i had 512X384
pls have a look

Also the last thing. If necessarry i can post screenshots of all my gordian knot setting on yahoo photos. please feel free to request it.
thanks in advance

Do I understand you correctly? In this latest run, the first pass completed cleanly (33896), but you had a failure during the 2nd pass?

If so, you have a hardware stability problem, and I refer you again to the thread on analyzing stability of CPU and RAM, above.

If not, please post the new log.

no the whole thing encoded succesfully
how about i just post my scrn shots

6th January 2006, 17:25
This is an attempt to encode a TV show correct? Are you using an IVTC option? I know that incorrectly using IVTC, or forgetting to check the IVTC in AVS correct frame count option can screw up an encode in GKnot. Also if your source is PAL (which I think yours is) you should never use the IVTC option...

Kind of grasping at straws at this point, but I have seen this issue before caused by IVTC problems.

Cheers!

No, Niann, this is a PAL disc that king22491 has been struggling with -- there have been encoding errors -- vdubmod would fail before completing the encoding. In the one log posted, we've looked at a failure of the first pass.

I do not understand the *current* problem king22491 is having -- if the encoding completed successfully, is it still a small output file? If so, posting the latest log would be much more valuable then posting screenshots.

i got two log files ill post both...The first of these two is a duplicate of the one you posted the other day, from 1/2/2006 4:37:21 PM.

The last log you posted (from 1/7), shows that the first pass did *not* end early as it did for you on January 2, but it does show:Quality: 0.188 bits/(pixel*frame).
CompCheck3: 0.000 bits/(pixel*frame).
CompCheck5: 0.480 bits/(pixel*frame).Your log from January 2 showed a quality setting of 0.401 b/p*f. You cannot quadruple the framesize as you have done, and assume you'll get the same results.

The purpose of a compressiblity test is to determine the maximum bitrate possible. Best practice varies, but, as I said above, the 83.5% you had in your Jan 2 log (0.401/0.480) is acceptable.

In your January 7 log, there were two significant changes: Your encoding completed properly, without the error you had on January 2. You increased your resolution from 288 x 208 to 512 x 384, but did not increase your bitrate proportionally.Your framesize increased from 59904 pixels/frame to 196608 pixels/frame -- note that your b/p*f value dropped from 0.401 to 0.188, and your ratio of expected to maximum (0.188/0.480) dropped to 39%. In the .jpg image you've provided, you're using an even lower b/p*f value, and have a lower percentage, with a red warning in the GUI.

-------------------------------

What problems are you experiencing now? Since VdubMod appears to be running without error, are you getting incorrectly sized output, still? Does the resulting undersized AVI contain all 33896 frames? If it does, then I would look to http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=24584 for assistance, since it's applicable to XviD as well as DivX.

Neither of these two logs show b/p*f percentages such as you've described (15%, 60%).

------------------------------------------------------

Based on what little I know, I can still not determine what happened on January 2. Earlier, I recommended looking in your Event Log to see if there was any indication of a failure there.

If you continue to get "VdubMod errors" -- look to your Event Logs to determine the error, and look to your GKnot logs to see if they're occuring at the same place.

If they're occuring at different points in the encoding, you have hardware stability trouble. If they're occuring at the same point in the encoding, you have content trouble.

i just dont understand y im getting two output files instead of one??
ok ill start from scratch.
can you give me a full detailed guide to use for gordian knot where if i follow all instructions i will get 1 175mb file with no problems.
pls this is my last hope :(

The file with "_Movie" in the name is without any audio. GKnot muxes audio with video at the end.

The file without "_Movie" in the name is the complete file.

I recommend Doom9's guide. If Gordian Knot is too complicated, I recommend Auto Gordian Knot. These days, the latter is much more popular, though it doesn't have the customization capabilities of GKnot. Since you're not using those, you have no specific need to stick with GK.

i wanted to get the same results as expert such as <edited per Rule 6>
he uses vdubmod and avisynth scripting. i wonder how they learn these things.how did learn so much about Xvid encoding. did u read books? or take classes or something. so if you could tell me how i could learn about advanced xvid encoding it would be much appreciated.:D

I can tell you how I began: with Gordian Knot and Doom9's step-by-step guide, in 2001. I made plenty of mistakes. I ended up reading his guide over and over... until I could do an encoding that looked good to my eyes. Those same encodings don't look as good to me, now.

An episodic disc such as the Family Guy you're working with is a poor choice to start -- because the "howto" guides, such as Doom9's, are focused on full length works. At this point, you need a little more knowledge than can be gained from a "howto" alone in order to work correctly with episodic discs. You need a "whatitdoes" -- and none really exists in succinct form. That sort of information is spread widely throughout the forum.

In brief -- in brief, mind -- the difference between Auto GK and GK are primarily in the need for operator knowledge. Examples that come to mind immediately: GK allows you to select filters that alter the video image -- such as noise reduction, interlace and telecine management, and the like. In order to select those, you need to be able to view the current content, determine if one (or more) are needed, apply the filters with the appropriate settings, and so on. This knowledge comes from reading, and experimentation. AGK will analyze the content for you, and apply appropriate filters.

GK allows you to select a resolution and account for total capacity including soundtracks, subtitles, container overheads, and the like. In order to select the appropriate resolution for the appropriate bitrate, the process of compression testing and resolution setting is a manual one. With AGK, by default, resolution setting and bitrate selection is automated. Decisions on codec settings are also made for you.Reading and testing is required. XviD, for example, has its own forum section here, where much about it is discussed, and it has its own website and forum as well. The onus is on you to do the research into areas of interest.

One document you might find helpful, because it applies very well to all MPEG codecs, including XviD, is the DivX 5 User's Guide -- the English version is available from http://download.divx.com/divx/DivXUserGuide521-en.exe -- it discusses how MPEG compression works, with easy to understand graphics and text. In addition, it covers many MPEG features used in other codecs, such as XviD.

I followed the guide.

I made errors because I misread the guide.

I tried again. Sometimes, things worked right. Other times, I ran into trouble.

I searched here, and often found threads that helped. Learning to use search here is critical to your eventual success. (Having the search results shown as individual posts rather than the entire threads helps dramatically.)

I tried again.

I made mistakes.

I googled.

Googling just now helped. It pointed me to your "expert" as being some sort of release group, primarily of copyrighted broadcast television. Since we're very careful about intellectual property rights and Fair Use here, I've taken the liberty of editing your earlier post. We don't condone IP theft, and that includes even providing so much as a name of this type of entity.

Please review Rule #6, (http://forum.doom9.org/forum-rules.htm) its one of our most important rules. Our definition of Fair Use is in the Piracy and Copyright section of http://www.doom9.org/disclaimer.htm.

Thank you.
