DV interlaced to Progressive AVISynth Script - little help needed

Hi guys,

Happy New Year I hope you had another wild night as we did :) .
I was wondering what are the advantages and the disadvantages of converting interlaced DV source to Progressive in order to get better motion,more like film & to get close look to film.Considering the fact that I use DV cam that records interlaced I haven't got the option to experience the difference, true progressive scan recording.Scharfi's Braing scripts for interlaced croping & resizing helped me a lot,can someone help me to produce avs with propper conversion from interlaced(PAL DV Source) to progressive.
Any help greatly appreciated.

So do you want your footage progressive ala 24fps film or progressive ala 50fps video?

I'd suggest using mvbob (http://home.arcor.de/scharfis_brain/mvbob/mvbob.rar) for 50FPS and Restore 24 for 24fps.

Tnx. for the quick responce,to be honest whichever looks better,I'll try both.
I think progressive ala 24fps Film would be the look that I'm looking for.

Restore24 converts 24fps films that have been converted to 25 by fieldblending. You definitely don't want that. Leakkernelbob or mvbob are all you need for DV.

Unless you're going to show it in theaters you should probably leave it at 25 rather than decimating to 24, as well.

Yes,that was my thread last year,on the other side I may just as well forget about all this coz nothing comes close to true Progressive Scan Cam,such as DCRVX2100

Considering the cost for such cam, in the HDV world HDR-HC1 is a ripper(IMO),very good price & lots of features.

Anyway,would be nice if we can do conversions like interlaced to progressive 24fps film on a DV source,cuts the cost down.

Restore24 might work then, although will probably cause artifacting because it expects blends. You'd be better off using truemotion framerate change after bobbing, like Motion's motionprotectedfps or new MVtools' mvflowfps. Otherwise scharfis has some good scripts for quick framerate conversions with minimal artifacting.

tell me exactly what kind of source you have.
type, resolution, framerate.

filmlook usually is defined by a framerate of 24fps or 25 fps (the human eye is not able to decide between both!) and a 50 to 66% shutter.

if your source is interlaced PAL, you need to:
- shoot with 1/50sec shutter speed (with shorter speeds one needs to simulatio motionblur)
- bob-deinterlace with a good quality deinterlacer. ELA based interpolation should be preferred over kernel based interpolation
- decimate the framerate by half

for NTSC based contents it is much harder.
- shoot with 1/60sec shutter or better with 1/120 sec shutter. The latter one enable us much more Filmlike motionblur.
- bob-deinterlace with a good deinterlacer
- use an advanced motion compensated framerate function, that internally doubles the framerate and then merges and decimates the frames in a clever way in a way to create realistic motionblur.

My source is PAL DV Interlaced 25fps 720x576 & I always shoot with 1/50sec shutter speed.
Would mvbob or LeakKernelBob do the quiality deinterlacing?
The conversion that you suggest will give me 25fps or 24fps?
Would you be kind to provide sample script for PAL DV?

Here is what Scharfi was suggesting.

A good ELA deinterlacing bobbing combo is EEDI2/TDeint. Then decimate by half.

SelectEven()#I believe this is the right command. Unfortunately I can't go to www.avisynth.org :(

Make sure to change order to "order=0" if you're video is BFF. This will give you 25FPS.

Isn't this a simpler way to do it:

Its cool that you mentioned Sony HDR-HC1 (I have it) and I really hope you switchover to HDV soon.
If you are working in PAL its the ultimate tool for filmmaking on a low budget.
Since you now work in DV I would suggest you turn off all the digital sharpness in your camcorder (if it is possible), use MVBob and then Limitedsharpen to get clearest image yet minimal halos.

This image is shot two days ago outside my door, HDV 1080 25i(or 50i, depends how you see it), shutter 1/50 and the digitalsharpen turned off.

I'll try,I'm at friends place & I've got my cam with me but he's got no firewire on his PC.I'll find a way,hopefully today or tommorow.

To be honest,I'm cosidering buying one,just the dollar here in AUS droped down a bit & I'll have to wait or find a good deal worldwide,I think the cam is about $1700US.Tell me more about your experience with the cam.(privatelly if you want, not to hijack the thread) ;)
