im using the latest ver of nero recode and would like to know what all the 'custom' settings for an ASP profile mean....

in particular:

Quality/Speed:

--- Motion Search == EPZS and EPZS(squared)
--- NC Prediction == None, Normal and Fast
--- Scene Cut == 0 to 100%
--- Fast ME
--- Low Noise & High Noise
--- High B-VOP quantisation
--- Rate Distortion optimisation
--- Max MV Range == -16 to 15.5 to -1024 to 1023.5
--- Psycho visual quality == Disabled to High

i cant seem to find anything on these settings in the user guides, so if anyone can spend a few mins explaining what they mean and the best settings i would be grateful.

P.S anyone know if there is such a matrice file available for soccer games??

I can help you for a couple of them :

- Scene cut : percentage of pixels that need to be different between 2 frames for a scenechange to be "detected" (unless It might be 100 minus that value), leave it as it is (it should be something like 30).

- Fast ME : fast motion estimation, will surely decrease picture quality _a bit_, prefer OFF.

- High B-Vop quantisation : will apply more compression to B-frames (they represent about half or 2/3 of the movie's frames once encoded if B-frames are enabled during encoding). This MIGHT reduce quality (or filesize) a bit, it depends if nero already gives more compression to bframes like xvid does or if bframes are by default encoded using the same quantiser (this, I can't tell).
You'll have to try this out yourself, unless someone else comes round and can give you more advice :)

- Rate distortion optimisation : has something to do with the refinement of the encoding of each frame. I would rather keep this on since it doesn't eat too much CPU cycles and helps quality quite a bit.

- Max MotionVector range : maximum distance a macrobloc can "move" between 2 frames (and this also decides how far the motion will be searched for, so if you set a too large value you will decrease encoding speed for nothing, especially since around -32:32 is a maximum useful value for 24fps content)

- Psycho visual quality : will apply more compression in very dark and bright areas of each frame, where the eye can't spot the difference. You should only use this for a "final use" encoding, not for reediting later. Anyhow, this saves a couple of bits that can be reused in high-motion scenes and will give you a better overall quality.
