I could not find a control to increase the brightness on MPC, nor a sound equilizer. Am I missing something? These are on the new windows player and bsplayer.

No, you didn't. :)
MPC doesn't support these alone. If a particular decoder has such an option, then you can use it. (eg. XViD decoder has a brightness option.)
