View Full Version : Checking files before burning?

Is there an easy to learn freeware program that will allow me to check for errors after ripping and also after burning to minimize problems with playback on my standalone player? I recently moved to pgcedit with psl2 plugin and use dvdshrink with nero. Most of my backups work (thanks to guides here) but there have been problems with jerky pictures and freezing. I have searched posts and tried several programs but most have a steep learning curve (for me anyway). Thanks in advance for any help with my request.

I use VSO inspector to verify my burns, I also burn at 50% speed of what the media is rated for (Media 8x I burn at 4x). There is also a thread somewhere on the Golden rules of burning.

There are other problems that cause jerky pictures and freezing on a standalone that aren't caused by problems with the original file. As battscrew said, burn speed plays a role and is a common cause, plus the bitrate of the file can exceed some players. High bitrate isn't a "problem" and can be determined with GSpot.

Thank you for your suggestions. I have downloaded VSO inspector and tried it out. The program worked well on my DVD but I can not use it to test files on my hard drive. I burn all my disks(I use 8x) at 2.4x, perform deep analysis and compress at sharp(default)setting when using dvd shrink. Using VSO inspector I can now check my disk for an error or defect if it causes a problem, but I would like to be able to check my files before burning with a "one click" program or one that is not too hard to learn.

Load the files in WinDVD or PowerDVD, (I am guessing your burner came with one or the other) in the DVD on HDD mode. If you just want to make sure they are viewable thats a good way to do it. But if some backups work and others dont work very well, I would head to http://www.videohelp.com and check the media/burner/player compatability of the media you are using. I have a particular brand of disks that will play fine in my portable player, but will stutter and freeze in my older Sony player. Could be that the media is right on the edge of being compatable and a switch to a media that is known to work with your player may be all it takes to fix your issue.

Cheers!

There are a number of things you can try - ranging from the pricey (and flawed) Phillips Video Verifier to simply loading the output project into something like DVD Shrink or DVD Rebuilder (http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/) to see if it loads OK without errors.

Normally, if you have ripped with DVD Decrypter or with the plugin, your files will be completely compliant. The plugin is fully up to date - latest version is 2.6 - see Kill ARccOS in my signature.

As well, you can burn onto a DVDRW and check it out in a standalone player. This, of course, is the best test.

HNY to all.

Thanks to all and a Happy New Year. Here is a follow up on my problem: I updated to 2.6 from 2.3 (thanks) I used VSO inspector to get media ID on bad disk it was an HP branded disk made by CMC Mag - id CMC MAG-E01-00. I went back and checked several other problematic disks all were CMC MAG-E01-00. I ran VSO Surface Scan on these disks, all had errors but, I found a disk that worked well in my cranky portable its id was CMC MAG-F01-00. I have been using Sony disks for a short time and I hope this fixes my problem. Is it worth the effort to run VSO on all my new disks to ensure a good burn as I do not want to watch my children's travel movies before they get them? Again thanks to all who took the time to help me.
