View Full Version : Sony PSP UMD disc file structure?

I've been wondering: wouldn't it be great if we can just convert our DVD collection to UMD movie ISO files (which can be loaded in UMD ISO loaders) ? Max resolution, full quality and you don't have to buy every movie on PSP again ! I just bought Steamboy on UMD, but in no way am I going to buy it on DVD or vice versa if I would've bought in on DVD.

Now, there are some problems. Firstly, the format. It is supposed to be AVC, though MPC won't play the file (00001.MPS of about 1.7GB), not even sound. It just displays the time for the file, which is 2h01. That is, if it's correct, it could be.

Secondly, the "other" files. The directory listing of "Ronin" (Region 2) looks like this:

x
|__ UMD_DATA.BIN (1KB)
|__ UMD_VIDEO
|__ CLIPINF
|__ 00001.CLP (115KB)
|__ 00002.CLP (1KB)
|__ 00003.CLP (1KB)
|__ 00004.CLP (1KB)
|__ RESOURCE
|__ DE000000.RCO (413KB)
|__ EN000001.RCO (370KB)
|__ EN100000.RCO (372KB)
|__ FR000000.RCO (399KB)
|__ STREAM
|__ 00001.MPS (1.7GB)
|__ 00002.MPS (2.7MB)
|__ 00003.MPS (8.7MB)
|__ 00004.MPS (7.5MB)
|__ ICON0.PNG (20KB)
|__ ICON1.PMF (280KB)
|__ PARAM.SFO (1KB)
|__ PIC1.PNG (110KB)
|__ PLAYLIST.UMD (5KB)
|__ SND0.AT3 (177KB)

The CLIPINF files could be index (chapter) files, RESOURCE is obviously the subtitles, STREAM are the movie files. Is there a way that I could try to identify the MPS files what they are ? Has any research been done about the UMD movies yet ?

UMD movie ISO files
MPS contains:
video: 720*480@AVC Level3, bitrate can be freely set, most common setting is around 2000kbps.
audio: Stereo Atrac3plus, bitrate can be freely set, most common setting is 256kbps.

at this time it is impossible to encode MPS file since:
1. there's no public atrac3plus encoder/decoder. (sonicstage only encodes encrypted file which have DRM)
2. MPS container is not open to public, so without the tool provided by SCE no one can mux MPS file.

Suckage... Is there any hope for Sony releasing this or somebody figuring out the container format ? DRM can albeit be cracked, has been done enough before...

split and moved

isnt that file format simply a .mpg with a changed extension? try playing it in mplayer and check if it reports something like that
i would guess audio and video is additionally encrypted so i doubt you can decode the streams

and btw how can you get data from umd discs to your pc?

Thanks to someone on the maxconsole.net forum, I got the MPS files to play:

try installing these codecs to play umd video

Elecard MPEG Demultiplexer 1.0.10.50904
Moonlight H264 Video Decoder 0.9.0.50208

then load up only the MPS file in wmp, it should play.

Windows Media Player can handle them, but haven't been able to open them with MPC. The video plays ok, the audio is abscent (pretty obvious with DRM'ed ATRAC3).

I'm wondering if the sound NEEDS to be DRM-enabled. I'm not really good at the whole thing of multiplexing, containers and codecs, so my questions can be pretty newbish :o

Phunction, again, this doesnt belong to the avc forum, post here your umd findings

if the elecard mpeg splitter is able to split .mps files it mean .mps files are plain .mpg files and sony yet again simply created a "pseudo standard" (mpc cant play it as the internal mpg splitter doesnt handle avc-in-mpg)
atrac3 will obviously not be played if you dont have an atrac3 dshow decoder, also if there is no drm

as you can play the video it means that there is NO drm protection on the video, which means you should be able to work with the video stream in an unlimited way
so my question would be, can you cut a small part of that sample out and upload it somewhere? i would be interested in testing what features the stream uses

It would be really interesting, also if i'm not interested in strange iso loader (also because i think that they don't work with the last firmware or am I outdated?), and I'm hoping for a future UMD burner (o am I dreamin'?).
Anyway the video resolution of 720x480 seems to be functional for a future use on TV, so I hope for a burner too.
