View Full Version : Problems with backups

I have 2 DVD players - having backed up a DVD film I find that the backup copy will only play on one of the players - the other comes up "BAD DISK".
I have tried +R, -R, +RW and the result is always the same.

I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Hello, and welcome to the forum.

Look up your player(s) in the database at www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers -- search by make/model.

Thanks for the reply - but problem not solved. I do quite a lot of video editing and production using Adobe Premiere and Encore and all these work fine on the stand alone drive. Its only when I've backed up a protected film (protection removed using DVD43) that I encounter a problem.

Did you check your players using the database jggimi pointed you to? There could be several things at play here, but if one of your standalones recognizes and plays the disc perfectly, and the other does not, then what conclusion can you draw?

Does the film that you backed up play perfectly in your PC software players and the one standalone? If so, you can assume that the second standalone can't "see" the disc and there is a compatibility issue in play. Clearing up the potential compatibility issue is the first step; if you start troubleshooting your ripping and burning procedures before making sure that you're rock solid here, you're in for an uphill battle.

Yes I checked both players on the database - no problems there. The film I backed up (War of the Worlds) plays perfectly on both my PC and the one Stand Alone. The original film plays perfectly on all 3 devices - so I'm at a loss.

Are you re-authoring the disc or making a 1-1 backup?

Cheers!

I'm re-authoring the disk - i.e. main movie only
Thanks

Have you tried burning at a slower speed? I use VSO inspector after each burn to verify if was burnt well. Can you set the book type for DVD +R?

Have not tried burning at a lower speed - use the same speed ( x4) that I use for producing my DVD videos with Adobe Encore (this is on a x8 writer)
Thanks

what speed is the media? If it is 16x does your burner recognize it ok?

Hi!I do quite a lot of video editing and production using Adobe Premiere and Encore and all these work fine on the stand alone drive.
Have you tried playing any of these on your problematic standalone NOW (since this problem arose)? Do they still play properly on this standalone? Are they in "DVD-Video" format or Data DVDs?

Yes I have tried quite a few of these without encountering any problem.
Since my first posting I have now managed to produce a DVD that works on the problem DVD player by using Nero Recode but this took a considerable time because I found that I had to transcode the files, which I had no need to do using a conbination of DVD 43 and EasyDVD Shrink.
Thanks

using a conbination of DVD 43 and EasyDVD Shrink
A quick Googlesearch seems to indicate that "Easy DVD Shrink" is a (commercial) program and not the widely used and respected (freeware) DVD Shrink that you'll see referred to in literally thousands of postings at this and other forums.

You might want to try using the freeware DVD Shrink instead and see if this eliminates your difficulties...

Thanks - I will try DVD Shrink and report accordingly.

You can get DVD Shrink in the download section here @ doom9.
Look under 'VOB tools'.

Have now used DVD Shrink and the resulting disk works fine on both DVD players.

Thanks to all for your suggestions.
