I noticed that the newest HC encoder included in DVD-RB Pro is a test build. Is this like an alpha program that might be best suited for those who are testing the build or is this like a beta where most bugs are worked out?

when HCBatch0.16A beta is used it reads **TEST RELEASE** 05-12-2005

Checked it in my DVD-RB install directory and you're right, it's not the latest version of HC.
Just download the complete version of HC016 from the download area and copy/rename the batch executable into the HC Encoder directory of DVD-RB.

Odd. The version that is labeled test version has a later modification date (12/17/05) than the official version 0.16 (12/14/05) available on the download section for this website. Did the test release have further modifications after 12/05/05? By the way, Merry Christmas everyone!

The gui release recommmends Avisynth 2.5.6a Should this be packaged in with DVDRB in the future?
Also, the HC gui has a much later version (in fact 3 later versions) of DGDecode. Should the latest version be the one to use or the one packaged in with the installer?
Can it do any harm to install the latest versions?

DVD-RB will only work with the version of DGDecode(1.10) that comes with the installer. I've upgraded Avisynth and have had no problems.

Just download the complete version of HC016 from the download area and copy/rename the batch executable into the HC Encoder directory of DVD-RB.I guess this was just confusion on my part. I loaded the one that said 0.16.1 (16A) that I had been using/testing. I had assumed it was the most recent. I'll update it on the next version.

I just updated AVISynth as well as the HC encoder and re-checked the versions in DVD-RB. It may have said this before and I didn't notice, but now it reads
DECODER Version: UNKNOWN
Is that for DGDecode ?? The newer version of HC's encoder has a DGDecode sub-directory. I've renamed it and DVD-RB still lists "Unknown". Am I worrying about nothing ??

Yes it's for DGDECODE. It's nothing to worry about. The newer HC isn't related to this. If you look at dgdecode.dll under Windows Explorer, it also doesn't show a version either.

Odd. The version that is labeled test version has a later modification date (12/17/05) than the official version 0.16 (12/14/05) available on the download section for this website. Did the test release have further modifications after 12/05/05?This didn't ever get answered. What is confusing is that the Windows "Properties" for these files are exactly the same except for Date Modified. Then when you run the version included with RB Pro (which by the date LOOKS to be the more recent of the two) it has "*** TEST RELEASE *** 05-12-2005" in the header, and the one included with the latest download does not.
I'm not sure how this happens; in any case I've now placed the 14-Dec-2005 file, which has no "TEST RELEASE" in the header when it runs, in my RB folder. I hope this is the right one!!!

That's probably because the date modified gets set to the date/time you unzip it in windows. That would just be the date I unzipped the version included in the installer.

Hmmm, I was about to slap my forehead but then I tried this with my zipped copy of HC_016, and the Created and Accessed dates are Today but the Modified is the original date in the zip package.
Regardless, I am comforted that the *** TEST RELEASE*** is now gone.

Thanks on the DGDecode question. Safe to say that a fresh, clean install reports "Unknown" for the version too, yes ??
