View Full Version : RB thresholds for matrices?

What are the programmed bitrate thresholds that RB uses to decide when to apply the 'low-bitrate' or 'very low bitrate' quant matrices I've selected?

I'm sure that the cutoff for Low is below 3000, and the threshhold for Very Low is below 2000.

I haven't tried it since about RB Pro v.1.00 using HC but when choosing a 'lower bitrate' matrix at the point where the second matrix kicked in there was a flicker.
For example doing a movie only on Million Dollar Baby, I picked the Mpeg Standard for the main feature Matrix and the BDVD matrix for the 'low' and 'very low matrix'. When playing back from a burned DVD there was a flicker at I suppose the matrix change.
I went back and encoded mpeg standard for the whole movie only and there was no flicker.
I don't know if anyone else had this problem.
Just something to look out for and as I indicated I haven't tried more than one matrix at a time since v.1.00.
Since then I have used mainly one Matrix for the whole 'movie only'.
Fox, BDVD, AVAMAT6, blah, blah etc...
I don't know what the thresholds are but what SpazzHH says sounds about right.
Merry Christmas to you guys, :D you are probably both getting snow in Tennessee and Virginia, right?
Doesn't snow where I live... not in about 20 years anyway. ;)
edit: Found the below in the help file...
A matrix can be selected for normal, low bitrate (< 3Mbs), very low bitrate (< 2Mbs), or for use against extras only (e.g. for half-d1). The appropriate matrix will be used based upon the bitrates DVD-RB calculates for each segment.

@ SpazzHH, feedback:
thanks for the info -
I haven't noticed a flicker myself, but I haven't really examined the points where the matrices shift very closely either. I will have to look at those points to see if I notice anything in the future.
@feedback - no, no snow falling at the moment. In fact, it may rain here on christmas :(

Ok so we have low, medium, and high ? how and when do they shift in ?
I'm currently encoding with HC16A and the figures for one segment are 1583 minimum, 4659 maximum and 2766 average. Does this mean that a low matrix is being applied for a few seconds and then a shift or does a matrix apply on a segment basis ?

@Harrysmiith
It's on a per segment basis. It can be performed on a per cell basis using sapstar's qmatop proggie, which is run before encoding.
