Any videos or something that will help me calibrate to find the best brightness/contrast (etc) settings ?

And also, where can I find reference videos with divx, xvid and other formats
that are fully in accordance to the encoder specs ?

I use MPC/FFDSHOW on W2K and experience some annoying playback issues.

ucan buy some disc, or download test pictures, which will help you to calibrate your system, like a TV mir for the color, or the black and white bars...on some dvd movies, they give you some THX and pictures calibration tests.

just try on goolge, "TV calibration images,..."by exemple.

I think those kinds of patterns (color bars etc) are pretty useless without colorimeters. They give you a rough idea what the colors look like, but you can't accurately adjust them unless you measure them or have some calibrated reference monitor to compare to. The only thing you can calibrate without those is gamma. For that you can use a pattern like
http://normankoren.com/monitor_test_txt22.png
That should be equally gray everywhere (look at it from far enough away so that the black and white lines blend into grey). If not, you can adjust the gamma (in case of Windows, Display -> Settings -> Advanced -> Colors for example) to fix it. To calibrate your media player with it, make a video clip out of that picture and play it back (those color settings don't affect Overlay, so you'll need to adjust the Gamma value from the Overlay settings).

I read this guide http://www.aim-dtp.net/aim/calibration/index.htm and calibrated the gamma on my monitor using http://www.aim-dtp.net/aim/evaluation/cdg/cdg-beta-v17.png
