Converting PAL to NTSC

I bought some DVDs in Russia. They play fine on my PC, but not on my home DVD system. I tried to make a copy using DVD Shrink assuming that the region encoding would be removed, but the copy won't play on my home DVD system.

Does anyone know why or what can I do?

OK, I'm just a bit new to all this stuff. Does it make sense though that a DVD will play on my computer, but not on home dvd machines. I had though that computer DVD players were also set to play specific regions only & you'd have to change the region for it to work.

1) Does the ORIGINAL, purchased DVD, play on your standalone DVD player?

2) Have you previously successfully burned DVD copies (using DVD Shrink and the same media you're now using) that DID play on your standalone DVD player?

3) Exactly what happens when you try to play this copy on your standalone DVD player?

4) What is the brand and model number of your standalone DVD player?

5) Region encoding has nothing to do with the difference between PAL and NTSC format. You haven't said specifically, are the purchased DVDs stated to be in PAL format?

1) No it doesn't

2) Yes - never had any problems using DVDshrink

3) Both original & copy say "Please check the TV system." I've rtied it on 2 diff DVD players.

4) A Samsung S221

But is it a PAL DVD? The last time I put a genuine PAL DVD in my PC it gave me the message that this computer is set to a different region encoding.

You should be able to find that information on the DVD label and/or the DVD package...

region coding and format (PAL/NTSC) are not the same thing (although most 'regions' tend to be of one format only).

you may have a 'region-free' PAL dvd which would play on your PC without 'region' warnings but will not play on your NTSC only standalone.

EDIT: You should be able to find that information on the DVD label and/or the DVD package... although this may be one option, the most reliable and simple way i know is to open the VIDEO_TS.ifo (or any of the .ifos for that matter) in ifoedit and you will see this information in the overview window, eg:
