I`ve just taken a DVB recording on which the final scanline stops about one-third of the way across the screen...

Is the effect normal? It is rather distracting on playback.
(16:9 UK FReeview CBBC broadcast, recorded as .ts with Webscheduler + Hauppauge Nova-T, demuxed with ProjectX, still from VDMod. I would post a .ts fragment, but I dont know which cutters are reliable... )

To be honest, this doesn't look out of the ordinary when compared to recordings I've made using exactly the same hardware and software as you. I recorded a 10 minute clip from BBC1 last night, and the same effect is visible on the first line as well as the last - but the first line appears to start part way along the screen!
That said, I'm almost certain I've also seen this on my TV using a set-top-box, so it may be another freeview transmission quirk. Sorry I can't tell you why - but at least you know it's not just you!

Extensively using a dvd-recorder, I've noticed the same thing on most of my recordings. I believe that that's just they way they broadcast.

that's perfectly normal.
you'll notice the top scanline does the opposite - it starts late where the bottom line ends early.
i think it's something do do with PAL only being 575 viewable lines, but i've never had it properly explained to me by a video techie.
some stuff comes straight out of the camera with that line, but you can count the camera out of the equation if you're looking at CG sequences :)
you might also notice that the offset changes depending on source/channel/time of day/phase of the moon/relative positions of the horsehead nebula with the centre of the galaxy...

Thanks for the replies, guys; it's good to know it's not just me screwing things up :).
same hardware and software as you.
Glad to hear you've tried WebScheduler! Hope its working well. I've now tested it on several captures and everything seems to have gone smoothly. I've also figured out how to set up the EPG; it's very convenient -- you can just click on a programme and select "add", and the recording will be scheduled. I can post the outline of what I used to get the EPG set up, if it would be of any use?

If you have the time, that would be great! I don't have as much time as I'd like to play with all these new (to me!) capture/demux apps.
Merry Xmas all.

1. Download and install XMLTV GUI from http://www.birtles.org.uk/xmltv/
2. Run it, go to tools/settings and check UK_RT. Click on Channels and select the channels you want. Close the Settings window.
3. Click on Grab Listings. This should create a ~1 MB data.XML file in the XMLTV GUI directory.
4. Move data.XML to \WebScheduler\data\xmltv\data.xml
5. Run Webscheduler, select program guide/data source settings, and select file source with source ="data\XMLTV". Click Submit.
6. Select Reload Data.
7. Select Channel Mapping and configure the channels.
You should now be able to click on show EPG and see the extended program guide. To update the listings for a new week/fortnight, repeat steps 3, 4, 6.
Merry Christmas!
