Hi, I thought I'd post here with all the good expertise on this board.

I'm looking for an MP3 splitter with the following qualities:
- Free
- GUI front end
- No audio processing, just splits file. A generic file splitter would be fine.
- Ability to specify number or size of split pieces (like saying I'd like it split into 2 MB pieces or split it into 5 minute pieces, etc.)
- Target files have the same extension, MP3. I found one splitter that has everything I need (a generic file splitter) but the output files are .mp3.1, .mp3.2, etc., so I have to rename them all!

I have found tons of MP3 splitters out there, but they are all either not free, or they are missing one or two of the above qualities.

Thanks for your help.
Dave

Wouldn't you have to give each of your target files different names anyway?(Not necessarily different extensions)

Yes, my only concern was that the extensions are not altered. Obviously in that case the filename before the extension would need to be altered. Anything like file_1.mp3, file_2.mp3 etc. would be fine with me.

I just want to quickly move to the next step of transferring the audio to a CD-R or MP3 player without having to manually rename files.

This is a very good piece of software, MP3DirectCut. Free, doesn't recompress and you can even record direct to mp3 should you so desire.
It can be found here (http://user.uni-frankfurt.de/~pesch/#mp3dc)
Hope it works out

Try Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net) . EASY and FAST.

I just want to quickly move to the next step of transferring the audio to a CD-R or MP3 player without having to manually rename files. You could try a "mass-renamer" tool which let you rename all your files in a single step. I know that a free picture application such as XnView can do that.
