MPEG Encoder - your recomandation - why?

As a newby, well not totaly, i am thinking to buy a Mpeg encoder. I heard and read a lot of TmpgEnc Pro and Mainconcept. How is your expirience with these, which would you prefere or are there other encoder which you recommend. Which is the advantage of the one you suggest (lots of questions, sorry)?

I mainly want to use the encoder to convert avi files to SVCD or DVD format. Automatic spliting feature in case of SVCD would also be nice.

you could use AVI2DVD as gui and for example HC Enc as encoder to convert from avi to vcd/svcd/dvd

this combo wont cost you a dime

It is not realy and question of the 'dimes' :). Most important is quality and flexibility.

well hc, quenc, freeenc and nuenc are the freeware encoders that could be used with avi2dvd

then there is cce

i personally like procoder very much but tmpeg is a good choice also
the choice is yours

I like a combo of tmpgenc for encoding mpeg1 and cce for encoding mpeg2.

HC is my encoder of choice and it is free. I use it with DVD Rebuilder.

It has been suggested that HC does a better job than CCE on lower bitrate movies. It is also known for handling interlaced material very well.

But to each his own.

HC is excellent - darned excellent. However, I am with DK and go for Procoder 2. Pricey though.
