View Full Version : Two problems with War of the Worlds

Hi, first of all, excellent program! Even though it does very complex things it's really accessible!

I've made a backup of War of the Worlds R4 (Brazil)
I've made a movie only backup, left only the English AC3 Track (Removed all others) and left all the subtitles (English and Portuguese)

Versions:
DVD Rebuilder Pro v1.04
CCE SP Encoder v2.67.00.27

Quality-wise the rebuild was perfect, the problem is, when I play the backup on my modded Xbox through DVDX (I use it instead ox XBMC because it has a very similar behavior to stand-alone dvd players), the subtitles display incorrectly.

It happens somewhat like this

Instead of:
- Were you on that plane?

It displays like this:
| - Were you on that plane? |
(with black bars on the sides of the subtitles)

This specific problem also happens when I backup with DVDShrink.

The second problem is, right about 45 minutes in the movie, in the middle of chapter 10 (I think it is where the layer break is), the backup always goes back to the beginning of chapter 10. If I try to fast forward through that part, the problem also happens. The only solution is to skip to chapter 11 and rewind until right after where the problem happens.

But the most curious thing is, none of this problems happen at all when I play the backup through WinDVD on my PC.

Besides that, the program is amazing! Thanks once again!

Regards,

Brotoles

(a) What did you rip it with?
(b) The LB issue sounds like a media/player compatibility issue. Does the DVD play find on other standalones?

I ripped the movie with DVD Decrypter v3.5.4.0 using the default settings and in File Mode

As for the LB issue, it happens only on my Xbox, and not on my PC, so yes, it is player dependant.

But the thing is, when I backed up the movie from the same source using DVDShrink, the problem didn't happen on my Xbox. So, it has something to do with DVD Rebuilder too...

I did some more testing with my backup... Look at these SHA-1 hashes:

First, I would like to note that when I used the "Full Disc" option of DVDShrink over the DVD Rebuilder source, the new backup would also have the same layer break problem (it would always return to the beginning of chapter 10 when it reached the layer break)

But when I used the "Re-author" option over the same DVD Rebuilder source, the backup now plays fine on my Xbox (doesn't have the layer break problem anymore)

I have almost no knowledge of IFO's structure, but since the only backup which worked had a different VIDEO_TS.IFO, I compared the working one with original made by DVD Rebuilder (using IfoEdit v0.971)

The "First Play PGC" subtree of the "VMGM_MAT" tree had one difference:

Working VIDEO_TS.IFO:
[00000004] Playback time (BCD) 192 [000000c0]
Playback time (hh:mm:ss.frame) 00:00:00.00 / 30 fps

Original DVD Rebuilder VIDEO_TS.IFO:
[00000004] Playback time (BCD) 49 [00000031]
Playback time (hh:mm:ss.frame) 00:00:00.31 / illegal fps

I didn't check the other trees, because I don't know what to look for, but I can post the IFO files here if you guys want, so you can check it more thoroughly...

One other interesting tidbit is that even though DVDShrink doesn't reencode the video, it makes some change to the VOB files, which unfortunately I don't know how to assess... Anyways, I don't think these changes affect the layer break problem, since both DVDShrink backups (the working and the non-working) have identical VOB's.

Thanks for your time, and regards,

Brotoles

P.S.: All the backups still have the subtitle problem (only happens on Xbox though, my PC and my Pioneer stand-alone players don't show this problem).

Here are the zip files for each scenario, the names should be intuitive, but here it goes:

DVD Rebuilder -> These are the IFO's DVD Rebuilder created in Movie Only Mode (have the layer break problem)
DVDShrink 'Full Disc' -> IFO's from DVDShrink "Full Disc" mode (have the layer break problem)
DVDShrink 'Re-author' -> IFO's from DVDShrink "Re-author" mode (DON'T have the layer break problem)
Original DVD -> IFO's from the original DVD, just for checking. I only zipped the VIDEO_TS.IFO and VTS_02_0.IFO, which is the movie titleset.

Hope this helps, my best regards,

Brotoles
