Is there an easy step by step guide for raw h264 file --> avi container? I've searched but haven't found anything.. Sorry if this has already been asked

In my opinion avc2avi (http://www.webalice.it/f.corriga/x264/avc2avi_rev267_mmx.7z) is the simplest way to do this, the usage is very simple: avc2avi -i input.h264 -o output.avi.

still i would place avc in mp4 or mkv. for mp4 muxing there is a nice gui for mp4box existing called yamb
for mkv muxing you can use mkvmerge

actually you could also do it with mencoder.. if you search around this forum you'll find a post of mine about the subject.

you could use YAMB also for avi output: load the raw stream in YAMB, change the outputpath to *.avi and here you go...

I would like to put a raw avc (x264) into avi but have no experience with command line. Can someone give an idiot proof quick guide for making this work or link me to a site that might be useful in this area?
Thanks

you should change dir to the directory ("cd\my\directory") where avc2avi.exe is listed.

in megui, i tried using mencoder avc -> avi, but froze at 400 kbUnfortunately that's just one of the many bugs in mencoders the developers don't seem worth fixing :( If anybody ever comes across a reasonable avi muxer (supporting (vbr) mp3 input, ac3, output splitting, raw m4v and 264 input, please let me know.. it would allow my muxer to get much better).

yah it's all quite hilarious..
anyway a friend of mine puts my avc (mp4) files into avi containers and they play on his standalone using WinAVI_Video_Converter.exe. Hey everyone started somewhere, give a guy a break, at least I'm trying to learn some things, much of this avc stuff is new to me.
As you can SEE, it's not my expertise. It's obvious some of you get quite a rise with putting those less experienced down a few notches. I would never act with such disrespect to a client of mine in my profession.

Standalones don't play AVC yet. WinAVI converter uses recompression; you could get the same effect by loading the mp4 into avisynth+virtualdub (or RealAnime), then encoding to xvid. That's much different than "putting avc (mp4) files into avi"; it significantly reduces quality, and may take hours. Very few of the generic recompressors are worth paying more than $5-10 for, when set next to free tools.

Also consider that they are talking about creating the mp4. If you want standalone compatibility, then you can skip that step and just create the avi directly.
@pwh04, it isn't that you didn't realise that a standalone won't play just any avi. It is about how you went about this whole thing (three posts). At least to me.

thx Foxy for the info about Winavi, makes perfect sense.
Celtic: I simply asked for a little help with avc2avi using command line - nothing more. It appears it's not all that easy :(

It's not a disrespect. But it is an absolutely wrong question you have asked. You want a video file to play on a standalone player, right? So why didn't you ask: "How can I convert an MP4/AVC file to play on a standalone player?". Instead of it you asked a question how to mux .h264 into AVI. Well you can easily do it, but it won't help you.
So you should have read something about MPEG-4 before asking a question which won't solve your problem anyway.
I'm quite sure thet WinAVI_Video_Converter will transcode the original file to a different compression when converting to AVI.
