maybe a stupid question from Europe(sorry for my bad english), but why some people upload copyright materials on the net?
what they have to win if it is not to be in trouble?
what s the point for a guy to be on an open connection, or crack a wifi and upload the last movie you can watch anyway in your theater for 5 bucks?has he an excess of generosity?
my second question, dont you think the government itself is responsible of this mess, and if a company should sue someone, it is the governement who has limited the encription code so it is the governement which should be sued.
when you see the number of cases, why they dont try to solve the problem at the root and stop to go after downloaders/uploaders.
the only way to go around this, is of course to lower prices, or sell more...a kind of" bang for your bucks".If we can get a DVD only sold in a plastic folder, with no box, no commercial and no BS(commercial crap) included.Certainly for 5 bucks, we will all buy the DVD.(same way in asia, where you can get softwares with no box).
Christmas is coming, and when i walk in the shops, I see al these MP3 player at 20 gig or more.you can download 5000 songs or more.and where do you think the songs come from?
it is very tempting to fill his MP3 hardrive with thousand of songs.and now they have the psp of sony, and they wonder why people download illegal movies?
have you seen the price of these psp movies, crazy, no????
so they can sue everyone on this planet,... they will not find any solution.
except if we reinstall a guillautine on a public place.(for people who dont know what a guillautine is, kind of blade to cut big cigares!!! )Vive la France, et vive la republique!!!

Yeah, I just had a look, double price of a DVD for the PSP version of the few movies that I checked. Still it wouldn't be legal here to buy the DVD and convert for the PSP.
By uploading most of the time I would imagine that they mean someone using say bittorrent to download which also requires uploading.

you can watch anyway in your theater for 5 bucks?has he an excess of generosity?I don't know about Europe, but here in USA, prices are pretty steep. My local AMC theater charges $8.50. Just went there yesterday night to watch King Kong. Had I missed the 8:00 PM show, the only other option was to drive 10 miles more into the neighboring state and there they charge $9.75. Probably for King Kong I might have forked out the money, but for the other usual dumb movies, even $8.50 is daylight robbery not to mention $9.75 !!@#

$8.50? That's piss all. Here in London I pay around £10 a lot for tickets a lot of the time (around $20). Hell, the last two cocerts I went to cost like £29 each -_-
10 bucks? Sorry, but screw you*; double that and you get the London price...
*Don't mean to offend, but it's how I feel when I pay more in pounds, NUMERICALLY, than dollers... and that's before you factor in the pound being worth twice as much per unit :/

You should be sorry! English was invented in Europe. :p
but why some people upload copyright materials on the net?
I doubt generosity has much to do with it. Release Groups do it for fun and a sort of way to give "the man" "the finger."
my second question, dont you think the government itself is responsible of this mess, and if a company should sue someone, it is the governement who has limited the encription code so it is the governement which should be sued.
You can't really sue "the government." The courts themselves are part of the government.

Older and less popular movies are often sold as you suggest, but not usually as cheap as five bucks.
have you seen the price of these psp movies, crazy, no????
I wouldn't spend a penny on a PSP movie, even if I had a PSP.
so they can sue everyone on this planet,... they will not find any solution.
Suing everyone is a solution, at least for now.

When I was last in London I paid £4. You have just got to go see movies on cheap arse Tuesday.
When I was last in Hong Kong for a stop over I had some time to kill so I saw a movie. It was cheaper than here and there were no ads.

multiplexes tend to charge more than smaller cinemas.
for example, the Astor does tickets for 11 bucks (~ 8.25 U.S. dollars according to google) and that's one of the cheap places. multiplexes are around 15 bucks (11.25 USD), and tend to have shithouse sound systems, or good ones that are blown up in one or more channels, or the bass is too high/low, or the overall volume is too low so you're afraid to laugh at the funny bits because it'll distract people... then the projector's always out of focus.
then there's the stupid bastards that answer their phone and chat for 5 minutes during the movie! or the fact that there's always someone taller than you sitting in front (or they've got an afro or something).
i wonder why people even go to movies anymore considering a good hifi and a projector (slightly defocused, or you see the pixels too strongly) is just as good without the annoyances and price.
(is this biased opinion due to the fact that i'm in the DVD industry?)

Funky,...
talking about projector, got one last year after recommendation of a guy from this forum( it has changed my lifestyle), and never put my butt in a cinema since.
plus I ad an ampli 5:1, and I rent DVD for 2$.
I guess no so many people in europe have this system, it is more in the USA, where people build their own theater room.shops are packed with digital tv, but no front pjt.
is there any thread about "how do you watch your movies"?

I can pay less than £10 if I go elsewhere, yes. But multiplexes (the big ones in Leciseter Square in London) already have small enough screens! I want an A/V experience! Serious for audio. 5.1 setup on my PC is better than a lot of cinemas 0_o

I'm not sure what country you live in but at least in the US you can take the government to court.

This topic came up in Gripelog (http://www.gripe2ed.com/scoop/story/2005/7/4/05116/44775) not too long ago, a lot of people weighed in with anti-cinema opinions. Even if you don't care for all the ranting, there's some good info on projectors and economics there.

You can take low-level agencies to court. You can challenge laws in court. But, you can't sue the President, any member of Congress, or member of the Supreme Court for anything related to what they've done in their job.

There some plans to release movies on cinema, tv, pay/rental-dvd at the same time. Most of the business men are pissed by this idea. They won't get the money they wanted ;)
The good on the idea is, maybe there will be less on the internet (or more, I realy don't know ...)

I live in a town where I have never seen the theater do really good business. OTOH I usually go and watch matinees for a better price. I wonder how they can stay in business -- today I went to see Kong and the theater was only about 15% full...I'm thinking, it must cost a small fortune just to heat the place!!
So I do not begrudge the 7.50 US matinee price for a ticket to a movie. But it's a smaller town, I deliberately choose times that are not popular, and avoid opening weekends on big-ticket shows. Some shows like Jurassic Park, Titanic IMO really need the big screen for the full effect. Some DVDs I watch (Kingdom of Heaven comes to mind) I would rather see in a theater after watching on DVD. I do not have a HD TV yet but I did recently upgrade the sound system to 5.1 and I like it alot ;-)
Off topic, I thought Kong was created/crafted very well, but it is still the same stupid story ;-) If I could re-do today's movie experience I would have gone to see The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe. But, it's a small town and the theater house only has one digital surround viewing room so that's why it was Kong.

I would have to say people upload movies on the net for several reasons. Fun, recognition, sticking it to the man, and to help their fellow man. All about in that order. They are obviously filling a demand. A demand that the media cartels don't want filled.
I'll chime in with everyone else as well on what a ripoff the theaters are. For the cost of just two tickets I can buy most DVD and watch it at home with my entire family. Then should I mention concessions. Dear "insert diety here" they make the tickets seem almost reasonable. 3 bucks for bottled tap water? I can get that at home for free. Even at the new megaplexes the quality is hardly better than at home. Which is really the heart of the problem. A long time ago the theater was actually something special. Something you could not get at home. But not any more. Home theater has gotten just about as good as the regular theater if not better. The market has changed. The consumer has changed. The sellers havent. And now they are bitching about the obvious.
***2+ hour pause***
Ok just got back from said megaplex. Expensive to get in. Rape at the concession stand. Audio and video problems throughout the whole movie. But Narnia was still excelent. Can't wait till it comes out on DVD so I can watch it at home without sticky floors, dirty chairs, the moron on the cell phone, etc. Yeah it was the full experience. Guess you get spoilt when you go to the movies on wednesdays and there are only 3 other people there besides yourself. That and watching at home spoils you as well. :p

cell phone and popcorn odor(and sound) are the 2 worse thing for me.this is why when I am in the USA, I go only watch movies in dollar saver cinema, you know, the one at 1.00?...why it s called dollar saver cinema I guess!
during the day, it is ok, but avoid it like hell during saturday night show.
here in my little town in europe, it is so expensive to run a theater that it s now out of price to go watch a movie(12-13$).for the ticket price , i can get the DVD 1 or 2 months later(or rent it). I prefer to own my DVD with 580 lines pal, 5;1 sound, comments, subtitle, extra,...

Hate to burst your bubble, but the disc, case, and inserts are the cheapest part of the whole thing. You can get four color process printed DVDs with a full color insert, sleeve, a nice case, and even a printed box (for software for example) for less than a dollar. Going cheap on the physical media will only save a few cents at most.

That's my opinion too. The last memorable experience with the movies was the Star Wars III premiere in a nearby multiplex. We were shooting for a news report on the premiere, so the multiplex boss was being really nice to us and gave us good seats for free with free coke and popcorn, but still I didn't enjoy it... They were having big sound problems and so for the first half hour the surround channels were missing. Sometimes the sound switched to crappy stereo in between, but mostly it was center channel only. For over half an hour! I was surprised nobody seemed to care or notice. Nobody wanted their money back, nobody complained...
I'd rather watch movies at home, even I don't have a projector or a plasma tv!

Cinemas are a real rip-off! Maybe you can afford it if you are single, but try to take out your wife and your kids to the cinema one evening! Multiply the 9€ for the tickets, the 9€ for the coke and popcorn by 4, add the gas, and the parking and you just have to spend about 80€!!! (96$)

yes, go out with your kids is now expensive in europe.
when i see the cost of these projectors and bulbs making 2000-4000 hours (they say).
much cheaper to invest in a projector.
after 50 shows at home, it doesnt cost you anymore.if u say it cost you 80 euro, get u a good system...
i got a little benco exactly 12 month ago, used for 250 hours, watched over 100 movies + some videogame +some "TV"
for christmas, i 'll watch king of heaven by exemple (rented DVD for 2$).
if i had to buy for a new projector, i would go for a high def and spend a little more $ on it.
have a merry christmas!!!
