View Full Version : Suggestion on Key Distribution

I'd like to suggest a way to distribute the "SYSTEM ID" related key : jerry , you can make a little standalone proggy able to get the system id and a download page where you can provide a key-file related to user-info + SYS ID (as seen on www.dimadsoft.com in order to get the key for DVD-Remake) . This can help those guys who don't have an internet connection on PC's other than the home one (like me) in order to use your program . Thanks !!!

Thanks, I'll start working on something... you're right, though, the number of folks who couldn't connect to the server was larger than I thought (I think its around 30 or so people). I plan to send links to keyfiles in the notification next time so I cover both bases.
I just wish it wasn't necessary to need any kind of keying mechanism at all -- as its a time-consuming distraction from the real programming. But, unfortunately, that's not the case.

I'm afraid to say I'm unable to get the key too ...

I'm confident its a firewall gone rampant somewhere in the path between the source computer and my server. I've engineered networks and worked connectivity issues for years. Some network admins are really "quick on the trigger" when they see a virus or penetration attempt come from an address, and they just block an entire network by adding a deny statement to their access control list -- sometimes blocking 65,000 addresses... then they forget to remove it.
I saw this happen on a U.S. site once that accidently blocked almost the entire country of Belgium (one of the largest service providers, anyway). The funny part was that the network admin didn't want to remove the block because he was afraid he'd let something "bad" in... hehe..
As I get the SYSTEM IDs, it will make it easier on the next distribution. I can generate the keys ahead of time and include links in the notification. That way both bases are covered -- the 99 plus percent who connect ok can use the utility, others can just download the key from the website.

@Turisoft
I could not either. I'm from Italy too, maybe that matters in some way...
@jdobbs
Thanks for sending the key, I've received it!

I'm having trouble getting the key to v1.05. I get the Key File Installation window and click on 'Get Key File'. A window pops up saying 'The key file has been updated'. I click OK on that, and then when I try to open RB, the proceedure starts over again, and over and over.
What is my next step?

I'm not Italian, but Robot1 is... I read somewhere that he had no problems :)

Hi Rockas, I deleted by mistake my last post here about problems related to Italian people... So your last comment seems unrelated to the discussion. Sorry for the inconvenience.
Anyway I see Robot1 is able to register on line... So the trouble (me being affected too...) is not general to all guys from this country...
Cheers,

Well, I'm personally not very happy with the current method. While it worked fine for the vast majority of people -- there were too many who couldn't get through -- which is a pain for both them and me. So I'm brainstorming as to how i might do this next time.

My guess... I think the problem happens in systems with more than one network card (USB Adsl modems included).
Maybe the REG Application isn't trying to connect using all the open connections?
I mean... if I have the modem connected and at the same time I have a network card... isn't it possible that the Reg App tries to connect using both connections?

Anything is possible I guess. But when the REG app trys to connect it doesn't even look at that kind of thing... it just calls the Windows Socket DLLs. The operating system should make all of those kinds of decisions.

Seems like it doesn't :)
As I told you... when I have the USB modem connected directly on my computer, the connection doesn't work... I think the APP (or Windows) tries to connect, using my home network connection.
All the other app I own, work fine... maybe there's something wrong on the way the REG App calls the Windows Socket DLLs?
edit: Seems to me that the day I can connect using my modem... all the other guys will make it too :)

Maybe there's someone that can confirm this...
When I connect my USB Modem (ADSL)... a new (non-active) network connection is added on the "Connections List" - I guess this is only a "virtual" but the strange thing is that it stays "inexistent" 'cause the connection is made through the modem... wierd (I'm no network expert :D)
Anybody else with the same "add"?

I've been looking for a solution for the folks who haven't been able to connect using REG-RB.EXE. I have created a special version of the REG-RB.EXE file using a different connection method. If you are one of the folks who ran into this problem and would like to test it, please send an e-mail to dvd-rb@dvd-rb.com.

Very interesting concept. I have a wireless connection and wired ethernet built into my laptop and it refused to connect. I have 2 network cards in my server, too, but, one of them is completely disabled at the bios level and it was able to connect. You may be onto something there.

I'v never been able to download the key file even from day one (I have to go over to my mother-inlaws and download it on her dialup connection). I have one network card in this computer it connects to my router then to the cable modem. I can download the program .exe or .zip no problem it's just the keyfile that I can't download. I have called my isp and they told me they don't block anything so there should be no problem. Only thing I can figure is there is a router somewhere between me and your server that blocks the key file for some reason so no mater what the REG-RB.EXE tries to do I wonder if it will ever be able to download the key file.

I found the source of this connection problem, and am trying to get a new distribution together (v1.05.1) It should be out soon.
