Can ffdshow yield better image quality then DivX or XviD?

The title says it all:
Can you achieve a better visual quality with ffdshow compared to DivX and XviD using "best" post processing effects? Is there some kind of motion compensation for e.g. pan shots?

IMO ffdshow postprocessors are not worth using them. The video quality you achieve may look smooth but there's also plenty of sideeffects. Most dramatic is the high detail loss with almost all regular postprocessors offered. Using the rest of the filters you may get rid of certain flaws in a video, but there's no good automatic mechanism.

Sadly the only Decoder Postprocessor that seems to do a quite okay job is DivX, however the new DivX annoys me alone with it's stupid tray icon it always loads to give you features you'll probably never encounter in real life in some video except for shit you buy at divx.com or porn sites that try using it for weird stuff.

Just keep postprocessing off, makes no sense at all. Better learn how to properly encode the video or tell ppl you get encodes from to do so. Especially ppl using DivX seem to think they do good work with their encodes as they don't see the crappiness of their video because the DivX Decoder has Deblocking always on per default.

If you want motion compensation maybe try a temporal smoother or similar.

Interesting! What's a "temporal smoother" and where can I get one? I know Trimension (from WinDVD, where it unforunately never really worked), is that the same idea?

i like ffdshow's ability to add sharpness, which you cant do with divx

no visual quality lost with low percentage of mplayer post-processing as much as i see.
sharpness can be very nice indeed.
also, if you don't like the default filters you can just use avisynth with ffdshow :rolleyes:

Since nobody have the time to encode everything and/or teach everyone to encode in the right way, post-processing makes life much easier.....

I find that tend to use Levels alot.....
and sometimes Warpsharp too...
It's pretty much just a matter of personal taste....
