Combine Menu and VOB files

Hi guys,

I created a menu in DVDLab Pro, the VOB files in MOTV, they are slideshows.
I'm trying to get them to work using PgcEdit, and I'd appreciate if anybody can explain me why I get an error (in red) when I put the command you can see in the link.

I want to link VTST2, to VTST3, in practice, when VTST2 shows the last slide I want it to contune with VTST3.

Also, another question, how do I get rid of VTST1 that I had to create in order to have DVD Lab to compose the menu?

You cannot use Jump commands in a VTST domain. You have to use a Call command instead. (Be sure to set the resume cell to 1.) Anyway, since there is a call as your first post command, the Jump will never be reached, and is useless.

To go from title 2 to title 3, you have to create a new VMGM PGC, and jump from that PGC to Title 3. (In this case, since VTSM is a menu domain you have to use a Jump command.)
From Title 2, Call the new PGC you just created in the VMGM.

You cannot get rid of Title 1, as you cannot have a menu without a title. However, if you wish, you can remap the titles numbers so that the unused title number is 4 instead of 1. The real titles will be 1, 2 and 3.

Why cannot I get rid of VTS1 once I have deleted all the buttons linked to it and all its commands?

You can, but you will loose your menu. In short, you can't keep VTSM 1 without VTST 1.

Use the menu Title -> Remap Title Numbers. It's easy.

I have another question if you don't mind... I asked it into my previous post but nobody replied :(

The menus I created in DVD Lab Pro, have 3 buttons for each menu, I framed them in order to put a thumbnail in each of them, basically to be chosen among any of the slides.

Is this something I can do in PGCEdit?

The reason why I ask is because if I have to do this in DVD Lab, then I need to add the specific slides in the project in order to get them as thumbnails, but I'd rather avoid this if there is an easier way in PgcEdit.

Hope you can help me in taking the right decision.

No. To do that, you need an authoring program. Use DVD Lab. IMO, it's the best, and easiest to use.

But you should envisage to create a VMGM menu instead of a VTS menu. It's easier to access all titles from the VMGM than from a specific VTSM. Remember that you cannot jump directly from a VTS to another one!

However, you have already a VMGM menu, with 2 buttons. I don't know why. You may find it easier to have only one global menu. You can also create a simple dummy menu for each VTS to return to the main VMGM menu with the Menu button of the remote (Right click on any title of the VTS, and select New Menu.)

Also, I have to correct myself. I said that it is impossible to get rid of title 1. It's not completely true. You can start over with a new DVD (File -> New DVD), then import the titles 2, 3 and 4 (File -> Import VTST Titles), then select the VTST 1 and import the original menu (right click on title 1 and select Import Menu.)

The VMGM menu is there because I use it as the title menu to navigate down to the 4 submenus.

Why should I import the menu of VTST1? I mean, if I import the 3 titles, plus the 5 menus (4 sub + 1 title menu), I should have everything I need to navigate. VTST1 is a dead title, no links, nothing, it was only generated to allow the menu creation in DVD Lab, then I broke all the links to VTST1 and changed them to the other titles.

But you have to keep the menu currently in VTS 1, no?
If you don't need it, then there is an easier way to get rid of VTS 1 completely.
Remap the title 1 to be the last one (ie title 4), and use the DVD -> Remap Titlesets to put VTS 1 at the end of the compilation. Then, use DVD -> Delete Last VTS in DVD.

To go from title 2 to title 3, you have to create a new VMGM PGC, and jump from that PGC to Title 3. (In this case, since VTSM is a menu domain you have to use a Jump command.)


What above works but... Title 3 has to go back automatically to the Menu which generated it.
If I try to do this going through VMGM 3 (the new one I created), of course it finds the original "Jump to Title 3" command, so, I end up at the beginning of the Title 3 again :angry:

The only way I found to have it to work was to create a new VMGM 4.

I doubt this the simplest way or there's a shorter one?

GPRM? I still have to study how do they work :( maybe you can give me a tip?

Yes, using a new VMGM PGC is a good way to return to your menu.

You can also use the same VMGM PGC for the two jumps, and use a GPRM (which is a variable containing whatever you want) to select the right jump. For example, you can initialize the GPRM with 0, and call the VMGM PGC. In that PGC, if the GPRM value is 0, you jump to the title. In the title PGC, you must change the value of the GPRM to 1, and, when the title has finished playing, call the VMGM PGC again. Here, since the GPRM value is now 1, the jump to the title will not occur, and you can jump to the menu.
You can learn this tenhnique by analyzing a DVD produced by DVD Shrink in reauthor mode, with several titles (though Shrink uses the FP-PGC instead of a VMGM PGC to jump to the titles.)

IMO, unless you have many different titles to play, it is easier to use several PGCs.

Yes, indeed, my Titles are 22, so either I do 22 VMGM or I learn how to use the registers.

I'm more on the second option, since I have many DVDs to author and I prefer to play with the GPRMs.

No. Sorry. (BTW, in the old IfoEdit days, importing one single title was almost impossible, or at least it tooks hours!)
But perhaps it is easier to start with your 22 titles compilation and import the menus?

I'm trying to understand how GPRMs work and following your suggestion above I cannot get the whole thing to work.

The parts in bold are the ones I have created.
So, I have set GPRM0 to value 0 and 1 respectively for Title 2 and 3, then set a condition into the dummy VMGM menu saying that if GPRM0 = 0 then it should jump to title 3, if not, go to its RootMenu.
Well, it all works until the last point, in fact, Title 3 calls the VMGM Menu but from there it loops back to itself (Title 3).

Where am I wrong?
Also, when setting the condition, I cannot understand why I cannot set the value, something like below:
1 if ( gprm(0) == 0 ) then { (JumpTT) Jump to Title 3 }

but instead, I only get this:
1 if ( gprm(0) == gprm(0) ) then { (JumpTT) Jump to Title 3 }

You cant use immediate compare in conjunction with a Jump command.
It is necessary to write your values to another free GPRM Register and compare the registers to combine with a Jump command.

e.g

Set gprm(2) =(mov) 1

The problem is with your test:
1 if ( gprm(0) == gprm(0) ) then { (JumpTT) Jump to Title 3 }
Since gprm(0) is always equal to itself, the condition is always true, and the jump to Title 3 occur anyway.

You must compare gprm(0) with a value. This cannot be made with a JumpTT command. Don't ask me why. It's something stupid in the DVD specs.
But you can use the test in a Goto command, like here:1 if ( gprm(0) == 1 ) then { Goto line 3 }
2 (JumpTT) Jump to Title 3
3 (JumpSS) Jump to VTSM 1, Root menu (TTN 1)Note that the value in the test is 1, since we jumps to the root menu if the test is true.

Another method is to compare with another gprm, properly initialized:1 Set gprm(1) =(mov) 0
2 if ( gprm(0) == gprm(1) ) then { (JumpTT) Jump to Title 3 }
3 (JumpSS) Jump to VTSM 1, Root menu (TTN 1) But, of course, to use this method, you need another free gprm.

So far, all the VTSTs call their respective VMGM PGCs.
From there, I was jumping to the Root Menu with:

Into my VTST 10 I need to jump to its RootMenu:

VTSM1, LU1(en), 3 (6:09) 5b,

but I keep on jumping to:
VTSM1, LU1(en), 3 (6:09) 4b

Actually I have realised that:

always go to
VTSM1,LU1(en),1 (dummy) RootM
it doesn't matter the TTN #, so for my first 9 VTSTs, it goes to the right

but again, I need VTSM10 to end up into VTSM1, LU1(en), 3 (6:09) 5b.

Is this again a question to create new dummies??

You cannot jump to a specific PGC in a VTSM domain. You must jump to the Root, Subpic, Audio, etc... menu. Again, it's a stupid limitation of the DVD specs.
However, there are two methods to do what you want.

You can assign a menu type to your target PGC, for example Angle menu (with the Set Menu Type function). Then, use a jump to the Angle menu. But take in mind that this menu will be callable with the remote on some (rare) DVD players, with an Angle Menu button on the remote. You can set the PUOs on the title and menu PGCs of the same VTS to inhibit this button.

The other method is to use a gprm with, for example, the number of the PGC you want to jump to, and to call the Root menu. At the beginning of the root menu, you must test the value of the gprm, and use a LinkPGCN command to jump to the target PGC, or, if the gprm value is (for example) 0, continue normally in the root menu PGC.
Don't forget to reset the gprm value to 0 as quickly as possible, or the wrong PGC will be executed if the user calls the Root menu with the remote!

You can also test the title number, which ends up in SPRM5. The command is a little confusing and leads some people to believe there are root/sub/audio/angle/chapter menus for each title, when there are not. There are seperate menus of these types for each language, though. The TTN part of JumpSS sets SPRM5 (and supposedly if it is 0 SPRM5 remains unchanged, which will be the current title within the titleset number - but Scenarist and others disallow 0), so whatever menu you jump to can see what title was playing when it started.
You can also set up dummies in VMG, there PGCs can be called by number with CallSS.

I adopted the solution no. 2 of r0lZ because it is "cleaner" to my view.

However, as I mentioned into my previous posts, the Menu part is built up in DVDLab, while the VTS in MOTV.
Now, If you see the Menu part created by DVDLab, there are lots of VM Pre Commands which I can only guess are there to allow a certain degree of flexibility if you want to create your VTS with the same software.

I have also imported several menus made with Lab. IMO, it is easier to remove all commands, and to add what you need from scratch.

You could also try to understand the logic used by Lab and do your main authoring so that it is directly compatible with the imported menus. It's the recommended method if you plan to use the same technique often. (But, honestly, I haven't analysed the authoring in Lab yet.)

I have deleted of the Labs commands, if I run the DVD in trace mode in PGCEdit, it works smoothly.

Can you suggest some good test DVD Player?
Mark's tray has got problems to play my DVD, don't know why, but if it works fine in PGCEdit I don't see the reason why it shouldn't in Mark's Tray, at the end of the first VTS a window pops up saying that an illegal command has been found and the DVD might not play correctly. (also before I did remove the labs GPRS).
Mark's Tray gets stuck.

In this post (http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=762062&postcount=19), I see that there are no commands in VTST 1 (Title 1).
This is legit, but of course, when the PGC has finished playing, the navigation ends, and the player should return to the exit domain, af if there is no DVD loaded. Might be the problem.
If you have filled some commands in VTST 1, please post them here. Also, be sure that the problem is caused by this PGC.

I usually use IfoEdit to test. Though it's not the best player, it has several advantages: fast to load, it displays some error messages when an illegal command is encountered (though those messages are not always very understandable, it's better than nothing), and it can be easily launched from the PgcEdit's Tools menu, with the current IFO automatically loaded.
Here is the Tools configuration I use:
Label: IfoEdit
Application: C:\Program Files\IfoEdit\IfoEdit.exe
Arguments: "%p\%i"
Working folder: %p
You may want to tick the Save DVD, Iconify and Reopen DVD checkboxes if you wish.

In this post, I see that there are no commands in VTST 1 (Title 1).

In fact, this is correct, the VTS1 is the "virtual" VTS I had to create in order to get Labs to compile the Menus.
Actually, it is the VTS2 that I played and also the one which gives me the error.

I'll give a try with IFOEdit and see.

OK, the syntax problem is with the line:
(CallSS) Call the VMGM PGC 3
You should always use the resume cell option. So, the correct syntax is:
(CallSS) Call the VMGM PGC 3, resume cell 1
I still doesn't understand why and when it is allowed to use a Call w/o a resume cell. I may even remove this option in the command editor.

Also, you should add a post-command in your title 1, even if it is never played. If the user calls it with the remote, the navigation will end. You should return to your main menu, or start the whole DVD over by jumping to the FP-PGC.

I don't understand why you got the save buttons error. PgcEdit is trying to update the buttons in VTSM 14! Do you have a menu in this titleset?
Anyway, don't worry. Your IFOs were saved correctly, and the menu buttons updated in all menus before VTS 14. If you have some modified menu buttons in VTS 14 or after, you will need to edit them again. Sorry.
I will add a check so that this error will not be possible any more. Thanks for the report.

No, I don't have any menu in the tile set, strange indeed.

In the meantime, I have completed the DVD (see attachment), everything works fine in PgcEdit, except when I click next arrow in:

VTSM 1 , LU 1 (en) , 4 (6:09) 5b.

to go to the next menu:

VTSM 1 , LU 1 (en) , 5 (6:09) 3b.

I get the following message:

SPRM 8 holds the value of the highlighted button (actually, it's the number of the button x 1024.) So, if it holds 4096, it will try to highlight button 4. But in your menu, there are only 3 buttons. You must therefore change the value in SPRM 8 with a SetHL_BTN command (or with the highlight button parameter of a link command) before calling this menu.
Note that SPRM 8 is automatically changed to the button or BOV selected by the user in a menu, so, unless you change it explicitely, it's hard to guess which value it holds.
It is also possible to force a specific button with the buttons editor (in advanced settings.) In this case, the SPRM 8 is ignored, and the same button is always highlighted when the PGC is executed.

Your attachment is still not validated. Maybe you should post it as text between [ code ] tags. It will be available directly.

Wouldn't it be a possible solution for me to remove the "Virtual" VTST1 I had to create with Labs?

I burned the DVD with PgcEdit.

Here the major issues I found:

1) When I click Top Menu on the remote control, I get only the RootMenu.

2) When I click Menu on the remote control, I get no action at all.

Some of the VTSs, contain 2 or 3 Titles, maybe we can call them Chapters in DVD terms, for instance, VTST 8, once played back, at the end it goes to VTST 9, which in turn goes to VTST10.
Now, if I am into, say, VTST 9 and I press PREV on my remote control, I go back to VTST8, but unfortunately, if I click NEXT there is no action.
This behaviour is strance because I did not set up any Previous or Next PGCN link, although, I'd like the NEXT to work.
Any suggestion on how to force the NEXT to work?

Going from one RootMenu to the other (VTSMs), when I click the arrow button to go to the NEXT Menu, I'd like the first choice button to be highlighted as a default. How?

Only 4 points left... hopefully not difficult.

OK, here we go!

1) The Title Menu button (also called Top Menu on some players) jumps to the TitleMenu PGC. In your PGC, the first and only command is a jump to the RootMenu of VTS 1. This is why your Top Menu button seems to jump to the root menu.

2) The Root Menu button (simply called Menu on most players) calls the root menu of the current titleset. You have no root menu at all in all your titlesets but the first one, which is never played. To jump to the root menu of VTS 1 from another VTS, you have to create a new dummy menu (use Menu -> New Menu) and jump to the VMGM Title Menu, which in turn will jump to your root menu in VTS 1.

3) I'm not sure I understand. You say that when you are in VTS 8 and you press the prev button, you jump to VTS 7? IMO, it's impossible with your current configuration. You can only jump back to the beginning of the same PGC, and even that is a little bit tricky.
However, if you press next, you can jump to the post commands, which are executed. This way, you can jump to anu other PGC, via the VMGM.

To be able to use the prev button when in the first program of a PGC, you must set the "PrevPGCN link" in the PGC Editor to the current PGC number.
Similarily, you must set it also in the "NextPGCN link" to be able to jump to the end of the PGC (and to the post commands) when in the last program. (For the same result, it is also possible to add a tiny black cell at the end of the PGC, and assign it a new program number.)

To jump to another PGC from a title PGC with the prev button, you must use a trick. Right-click on the original PGC, and select "New Dummy PGC". In your case, this function will create the PGC #2, but with the same TTN number than the original. (It is important that the TTN number is the same as the TTN you are jumping from, because in the title domain, the NextPGCN, PrevPGCN and GoUpPGCN links can only jump to the same TTN!) At this point, you can set the PrevPGCN link to jump to your new PGC. In the new PGC, set the pre-commands to jump to a VMGM PGC, which will jump back to the previous title.

4) It is not possible to set the highlight to a specific button when you use a Next/Prev/GoUpPGCN links. But you can use a method similar to the one explained above: create a new dummy PGC, and jump to that PGC instead of directly to the target PGC. In the new PGC, you can use a SetHL_BTN command, and jump to the real target. Note that I'm not sure you can use a PrevPGCN link in the title domain.

It is also possible to use hidden, transparent, auto-activating buttons to jump from a PGC to another with the arrow keys of the remote, but that's a totally different method.

Organizing your video disc
If you have many photos & videos, you will find the need to organize them. MemoriesOnTV lets you group your photos & videos into albums and sub-albums (also known as tracks).
Each album is represented by the film icon on the Project Panel, and represents a continuous slideshow selectable from the disc menu. Each sub-album (or track) is represented by the track icon .

About Tracks

Every album will have at least 1 track. If you have more than 1 track in an album, they will play consecutively one after another. Tracks are not selectable from the disc menu. However, you can use the previous and forward keys on your DVD remote to navigate them when they are playing.

Now, the Tracks, are generated in MOTV as VTSs, so basically, they say that you can go from one VTS to the other by pressing NEXT or PREV.
In my case, only PREV works, but not NEXT.

Yes, you should be able to import the menu over, say, VTS 2, then move VTS 1 at the end, and remap the title 1 so that it is the last one in the list. Then you should be able to delete the last VTS. Use the "Info -> Find Jumps to nowhere" function to verify if everything went OK.

Note that only the VM commands in the PGCs are exported/imported. Not the commands in the buttons, not the other PGC parameters.

I don't know MOTV, and I cannot help with this kind of authoring. But I know for sure that it is impossible to call another title (not menu) with the remote without creating a new dummy title PGC, and also, if the target title is in another VTS, the usual jump via a VMGM menu.
Maybe a Track in the MOTV terminologi is something not related with Title? Are you sure you can jump from, say, title 8 to title 7 directly with the prev button?

BTW, it is probably easier to author your DVD this way:

I ask because both Mark's Tray and IfoEdit get stuck when I try to test if I can go back to the RootMenu.
Since I have to do this for the all the other VTSs, I want to be sure.

BTW, I succeeded to remove the VTS1, now I have 22 VTSs and all is working fine.

It doesn't work, it blocks also my DVD Player.

Also, setting in PGCEditor NextPGCN Link 1, still pressing NEXT on the Remote it gives invalid command.

It's difficult to verify what's wrong w/o the IFOs. Could you send me your IFOs and the menu VOB (I don't need the title VOBs)?

I was about to do that, but the IFOs and menu VOB are 85Mb.
A bit too much to be sent via mail :)

I tried the Copy2Clipboard in IfoEdit, but when I try to Paste it as a text on Notepad, nothing happens.

I'm sure there's an easy way, but don't know which one.

Hum, I need the menu to be able to trace your DVD.
I guess it's an animated menu. You could use MenuShrink on your menu to shrink it to a reasonable size. Of course, backup your DVD (or at least the VTS with the menu) first!
Another method (but more difficult for me, and probably for you too) is to send the IFOs only, and a dump of the menu button commands.

The copy/paste in PgcEdit works fine, but you may not close PgcEdit before doing the paste. (For an absurd reason of compatibility with Unix, the clipboard is emptied when a Tcl/Tk program exits.)
