i don't know if it's the right place to ask, but i've been trying to backup a movie with dvd-rb pro for a while and i get crappy results everytime, so i read about people using matrices from original dvds and i started to wonder if i can extract the matrix used to encode this particular dvd so i caan re-encode it again with lower bitrate.

thank you

You can use RME :)

I've used neuron2's 'quantdump' successfully to extract a matrix from a vob file. You have to use a command line process to extract, but it works well. here's the page:

Rockas, I haven't used RME to extract a matrix from a vob - would you elaborate?

You don't have to use the command line.

All you do is go to the bottom of RME then click the Extract tab, that puts you in the Extract mode. It is all right there in RME. I am using version 0.2.0.8.

archaeo I thought you knew this already. :D
It is as easy as pie!

Regards,:)

P.S. From Rockas:
Thanks to Neuron2's QuantDump, now it's possible to extract the original Matrices from the VOB files.
Note that on VOB file can exist several different Matrices, there's no limit for it. RME will extract the first two found (Besides MPEG Standard) on each VOB file you select. On 20 different DVDs I tested I never found more than two different, but it's possible that there are some exeptions out there.

geez I didn't know that - I guess I'm a glutton for punishment.
I'll have to get the latest version for the next project. :D

thank you. i also saw that applying fft3dgpu is producing a very nice output. slow as hell, but worth the wait

If you want a GUI for it, use DGIndex: Options/Log quant matrices. It will give you a log file with ALL the matrices from the stream.
