Okay, my friend has a 2-year old DVD burner that he also uses as a reader/ripper/player.

He tried backing up his brand new DVD of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The DVD refused to even play from that burner/computer - explorer can't even see the disc itself. The movie can be played on another burner/computer just fine.

Sounds like the burner is going bad, BUT the weird thing is that first DVD burner can read/play other commerical DVD's fine!

So is the burner going south? - all the info is so conflicting. Burner 1 can play other commercial DVD's fine, but not this one brand new one (surely not a new encryption). Yet the movie can be played on another burner fine so it's not the disc/movie.

Any ideas?

This is the original commercial DVD, essentially brand new too.
It can be played on another burner/computer.
But the first burner/computer can play other commerical DVD's fine.

Very conflicting info!

Lyphy, What sort of burner? What OS, I've been chasing a similar problem with a Sony DRU500a v2.0e for months. perhaps if we pool what we've learned. I suspect an XP security patch has affected this, but haven't found any helpful postings anywhere. All info to date has been erroneous or created other problems. If you start pulling upper and lower filters from you registry following advice, seemingly good advice, as always, export a copy of that branch first. I can almost guarantee you'll want it back.
In my case, the first instance was with someone else's burn. Now, I've discoverd six month old burns of my that have been well stored and unplayed, same problem.
